The food is very well prepared with fresh ingredients. Shrimp quesadillas had plenty of shrimp and soft shell chicken taco were great!

We ordered the nachos supreme and a chile relleno. Well the nachos had a good flavor but the queso was soooo runny. My wife, who is from Albuquerque, has termed the queso on Virginia nachos, queso water. So save the chips from your chips and salsa and use that to soak up the queso water. The chile relleno was not bad, but the red sauce was pretty bland.
Good news is that compared to Plaza Azteca, El Jaripeo, Guadalajara it is not bad option. Bad news for my belly is that none of those would be good options in Albuquerque or Colorado Springs, where my taste buds are.
Disclaimer: living 19 years between Texas, Memphis and Kansas City and 11 years in the southwest, has made filled my mouth with only sadness, when it comes to BBQ and Mexican food in Virginia.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0Dec 27, 2018Previous reviewHaving moved here a couple of years ago, after living in Albuquerque, NM and Colorado Springs, CO the previous 10 years, I am pretty picky with my Mexican food. While this is far from the best I have ever had, it is farther from the worst I have ever had, especially here in Virginia. I have not had a bad meal here, in several tries, but I do miss the days of being asked, "Red or Green?" when I place my order.

This is another place that used to be very good and has declined over the years. The food lacks flavor. The portions are good but not much taste. Service has always been good. Ambiance is just okay.

Probably the last lunch for us here on the dog-friendly patio until the weather warms up. The food is great with really fresh ingredients. The free chips and salsa is amazing. Chips are warm and the salsa has some bite to it. Service is quick, and prices are very reasonable. Can really recommend the fried chimichanga.

I've been going to El Agave for years with my family. A lot of the same staff has been there since I was young and they are all incredibly friendly. The environment is very welcoming with pleasant and clean seating areas both in and outside. The food itself is always top notch. They have some kickin salsa and the chips are always fresh. The picture I added with this review was from my most recent trip to El Agave, yesterday. I got the Vegetarian #1 (enchilada, burrito, and chalupa) and it was excellent. Tons of flavor and super filling. They are also almost always the fastest in terms of food to table service time.
Always worth a stop!Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Michelle S.Charlottesville, VA676341Jan 8, 2024Updated review
Always great service, always great food. They are like a family when you walk in and greet you with a smile and chips and salsa immediately. Someone on Google claimed the nachos were "soupy" with a white liquid. Clearly they have never heard of queso before. That's queso. It's cheese. It's supposed to go on nachos, and it's a normal queso. Always delicious. I always have pico and guac salad and lettuce with the tacos I've gotten, she must have just been a bad mood and thinks Taco Bell is authentic. As far as the chips and salsa, while it is the best salsa, also get some "white liquid" because their queso is amazing. They even have a great kids menu, and are a great price for always fresh, always delicious food.

Love this place. The staff is incredibly welcoming and the food is consistently good. I love the shredded beef enchiladas and pretty much other that every time. Their guacamole is always good too & seasoned well.

5 friends and I decided to stop in and have lunch as we had all traveled from across the state. We sat out on the patio, which had comfortable seating and surprisingly little road noise given it proximity to RT29. Service was attentive, and food served hot. good start. My "frozen" margarita was cold but iceless. I had the Buritto Carnitas, the pork was tender but under seasoned IMO and the Verde sauce was routine. The flavors were fairly good, but not best in class. A good value, worth going back if you're in the area.
