The catfish and collard greens are delicious, but the customer service is even better!
I was having an issue placing my order online, so I gave the restaurant a call. Without hesitation, the owner offered to deliver my food to me himself! Within 20 minutes my food was hand-delivered and hot! The owner even checked in later to see if everything was up to par.
Now I'm not saying for all of you all to try to get the owner to personally deliver your food, but I am saying that the folks at I'm Soul Hungry pride themselves on ensuring a quality customer experience. You can't beat that.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 3Oh no 0 - 3393381609Nov 23, 2018
(8/26/18) Took my girlfriend here for her birthday dinner. Wanted to expose her to some good southern soul food.
If you don't read any further just know.
GO ENJOY YOURSELF AND SOME WONDERFUL FOOD!
I ordered the oxtails with beans and rice and mac and cheese. I ordered the pot roast, potatoes and gravy and greens and corn bread for the birthday girl. The meals ranged for about $15 per but the sizings are well worth it. And the flavor and tasting is so freaking good, the price does not even matter! The establishment is really large and they have a built in bar.
The oxtails were a bit little to salty but the sauce was good. The pot roast serves large pieces of beef with potatoes and carrots to go with. If there was room left in our bellies, I definitely would have ordered dessert. But considering I will be returning in the future, there is also time.Helpful 6Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0 - Nov 27, 2018
I ordered delivery with a couple of friends from here this weekend. It's a new spot in the neighborhood that I only just noticed recently while walking down Howard Ave.
I used to live close to Luella's in Lincoln Square, so I was hoping this would throw me back to the Luella days I miss so much...I don't get back over there very often these days. I had an overall positive experience, with a few key notes that will propel this place from 3.8 to 5 stars soon enough!
We ordered two fish and chicken combos with an assortment of sides for three people. This was plenty of food. Portions are very generous. The fish especially, and also the chicken, were perfectly breaded. So well-seasoned, light and crispy breading. Absolutely delicious.
For sides we got a mix of mashed potatoes, mac n cheese, green beans, and sweet potatoes. Sweet potatoes were solid, mashed potatoes were good (although not all that creamy- more fluffy), mac n cheese was good as well. Corn muffins on the side were dry dry dry and ended up not being eaten.
I'm looking forward to dining in and meeting the people behind this operation! The food was clearly made with love and care, and I'm always thrilled to see a new spot in the neighborhood.
Looking forward to seeing them develop over time and hoping I can move this to a solid 5 in the near future!Helpful 3Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0 - Lanice L.Davison, MI01416Jun 10, 2019
Classy, Trendy, Chic!
I ordered the catfish dinner with mac & cheese, and greens.
The best catfish I've ever had!
The staff was very friendly, attentive and accommodating. The restaurant was child friendly. Classy enough for stemware. However, plenty of flat screen TVs for all your sports events, and entertainment needs.
Great restaurant!Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Aug 5, 2018
They're at the two months mark and they're redoing the menu soon so that there are options daily that the kitchen can easily prepare, and the slow cook specialities will then remain more on a daily schedule.
We came on a Sunday night after seeing that this has opened on the Chicago side of Howard and wanted to support anyone doing so.
Got the pot roast (great!) as well as the fish and wings combo. Both were $15 each and they came with two sides and a corn muffin. We went with greens, spaghetti, mash potatoes, and mac and cheese. Entrees and sides were great.
Dessert options were peach cobbler, chocolate cake and I believe banana pudding. Will have to save room for dessert next time.
Owner suggested keeping an eye out on their Facebook page for when their menu schedule is revamped.
Quiet end of Howard here so plenty of parking on the street - on Sunday, both sides I think are free (Chicago and Evanston).Helpful 4Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Scarlett S.Lincoln Square, Chicago, IL49267Jul 6, 2020
The best soul food on the Northside. I can't recommend this place enough. Everything on the menu is delicious, but the collard greens are by far my favorite, some of the best I have ever had. The catfish was perfectly fried. The black eyed peas were just that perfect flavor you want. Cannot stress enough how authentic and delicious this food is!
The staff is incredible and courteous! Cannot recommend this enough!Helpful 3Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Kim L.Glenview, IL23915Jun 24, 2020
I'm Soul Hungry was one of the only restaurants that came up after performing a Yelp search for soul food. My husband and I drove from Glenview just to pick it up. On the way home I was so excited because everything smelled so good in the bag. I got the chicken dinner and my husband got the catfish dinner. The catfish was seasoned perfectly and the corn bread was amazing. Unfortunately, the the chicken wasn't seasoned at all. In addition, the greens and sweet potatoes came from a can. I felt some type of way about it because I expect actual home cooked soul food if I'm spending nearly $50. I guess this is the best you're gonna get in the area...
Some of the reviews rave about the ambiance, so we'll probably go back to check out the bar once the covid-19 restrictions ease up. Hopefully we'll have a better experience with the drinks.Helpful 3Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Dawn V.Chicago, IL143571Oct 5, 2020
I came to this restaurant last yr for the first time. The food was ok but I was insulted by a drink named the Bill Cosby.I talked to management to Express my disgust for the name of drink and vowed to never return ! However its a Sunday afternoon a yr later I have company and I want fried chicken. This place is the only place close by that's open. This time however I had an amazing lunch the food was delicious the chef was friendly and the owner is awesome! I got introduced to peanut butter whiskey. Yes I said peanut butter whiskey.we had a 3 and a half hour conversation with the owner. The place has even been remodeled... if your looking for great food, great drinks and great conversation this is the place to go! Rogers park hidden gem.

Nope, I'm done with this place.
Which is a shame because the food is actually very good to the point where I recommended it to other people. But I cannot do so when I've recieved terrible service both times I've ordered delivery. The first time, I didn't receive my full order and was never told that there was a shortage and offered a refund.
I was willing to try a second time, since the owner responded promptly and apologetically to my complaint. At least they called me this time to offer a substitute for an item that wasn't served that day. However, when I agreed to have that item refunded instead of replaced, the entire order was cancelled--which I did not realize until I wondered what was taking so long for my food to arrive and checked the delivery status. This is the poorest, shoddiest service I've ever received. Next time, I will take the trek down to the south side when I want home cooked soul food.Helpful 5Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Kerry J.Chicago, IL316Apr 7, 2019Updated review

Feb 10, 2019Previous reviewFood is good. HOWEVER, they are very inconsistent with their hours of operations.
I have on several or more occasions ordered food through GrubHub and after waiting nearly an hour or so had the ordered CANCELED because the store isn't opened when they are supposed to be.
Let's not give credence to the stereo-type about black owned entities.
Please do better.
Your customers need consistency in not only the quality of food but in reliability of your operating hours.
What if I traveled from the other side of town to only to find that your store is closed when it is supposed to be open.
This is very unfortunate, but the food is good.
