Joe's Handyman & Home Services

We had our roof replaced in June, 2023. We needed someone to repair the 2 by 2 and half foot hole in drywall ceiling after the roof was replaced. It was difficult to find someone take a small project like this. Joe did a great repair job.
He took 2 trips to repair. One day to measure and replace the drywall and a second day to paint it after the drywall mud type compound was dried.

We tried to employ Joe's Handyman & Home service for almost two months. He was either unresponsive or texted at the last minute saying he could come that same day which we were not able to do. Did not coordinate with us ever. Last night he texted at 10:42 stating he could come today. At 5:30AM I texted back and said that would work. No response till 7am telling me he was going to have to book other work and sorry it didn't work out.
I would not use him nor contact him again.

This guy hung up on us, cussed us out, said he "was coming for us" and all done through text message (which I would be happy to share with anyone who is interested). Clearly not a professional person, or even seemingly sane. Definitely not good at doing work either. He charged $145 to change the wheels on a sliding screen door and clear out the dirt from the track while still leaving the actual screen torn and ripped which was the whole reason we had him out there. Could have just purchased a new sliding screen door for less money. Rip off. Do not use.

Joe is good at his job and worked for us for months. At first we had a great relationship with Joe. We didn't mind that he made his own schedule and came and went at his leisure. It was a bit annoying to have someone say they would come at a certain time and not show up until MUCH later or not show up at all, but he got the work done, that's all we asked. We'd recently hired him to do a couple more, lighter, jobs and we were planning a couple more projects.

He managed to get some of the work done but ultimately one of the projects still needed to be completed. Instead of coming over and completing the job he continued to come over just to give us estimates on our other jobs. We made it clear that we were still in the planing stages of these projects. Ultimately, we got an angry text from him when we let him know we weren't ready for the other jobs. He stated that we should "lose his number" after calling us "family". He also blocked me on Venmo when I attempted to request my money back from him. We had made it clear we had no intention of starting the job until we were ready.

Joe was having a hard time with money, so we fronted him the money for the little things around the house. It was clear to us that he would not be completing the job we had already paid him for. We opted not to meet him to return his tools. Something he demanded we do because he didn't want to come over. We would not meet him which he threw a fit about, even though we were out more money than the tools cost and we had agreed to give the tools back if he would just return some of the money for the unfinished project.

I suggest you hire Joe and see for yourself. He's reasonably priced, does good work, but he is irresponsible and has a tough time taking accountability for the things that he does. He makes people feel sorry for him so they allow him these missteps. He also passes blame off to his clients for time he himself has wasted. Our job never got done, we had to hire yet another contractor but thats the nature of the game so take my review for what it is: my experience.

Edit: Actually, I suggest anyone considering hiring Joe read all of his hotheaded responses to negative reviews. There are some in the "hidden" section of yelp as well.

I called and left a detailed message. The voicemail said it was better to text. So I left a detailed text for a very simple job. No reply. I texted again. 2 days and no reply. I was hoping for at least an 'average' Joe, but he failed to measure up.

I have a rental property in Bakersfield and needed a handyman to do some light items. We used Joe to replace a garage side door and repair the bathroom exhaust fans. The bathroom fans were not a problem, however, he installed the garage side door but never finished it. Items we had issues with were some dings in the sheetrock, damaged tile, broken trim piece. I had to go by and caulk the trim in, patch the sheetrock, and install a new lockset not to mention remove the old door that he left sitting on the neighbors property. They were not happy......We called and asked to have him go back in which Joe promised he would but never showed. All in all, got to keep looking.

Joe was called in to install a dog door. His work was very professional. He has all the correct tools to perform the job. He even made sure not to crack my stucco since the dog door went through the wall. I will certainly use his services again.

I would rate Joe with negative stars if that were possible! Our family handyman was out for health reasons or I never would have used Joe in the first place. From the get-go all he wanted was money -- first as a deposit before we even met him and then again for supplies and then AGAIN when we DID NOT owe him because he DID NOT finish the work. Reading other reviews on here and Google you can see that Joe has a bad attitude and an even worse work ethic. My husband took off work early two afternoons to meet Joe who never showed up and never bothered to communicate. He should reimburse my husband for lost wages! Joe has a bad attitude, isn't honest and doesn't complete the work. Save yourself the grief and hire someone who comes recommended by friends and family. A good handyman never needs to advertise! This guy either has a personality disorder or a drug problem -- his behavior was erratic and he harassed US even though HE was the one who didn't keep his word. I fully expect a hateful response from him because that's the kind of person he is. He gives small business owners a bad name!

We have used Joe a few times. He is a great general handyman, & unlike many, he always cleans up after himself. We have used Joe to build some shelves in closet, hang some crown molding, hanging large mirrors & other things inside the house, as well as putting together a kids complicated playhouse. My grandkids were thrilled with their new playhouse at Christmas. Joe is super friendly & down to earth. We will definitely be utilizing him again in the future. I had originally hired him when he 1st moved to Bakersfield & lost his number. Not was by chance I found him again on Yelp.

Joe was a great handyman and aims to please the client by doing quality work. He takes pride in what he does - as it should be. He is super - super friendly - explained what was going on when unexpected issues came up and completed the work. He is hardworking and he made sure to clean up after the job was done. I would hire him again in a heartbeat!
