I have not been to the this restaurant in about 2 years. The service was outstanding. The wine selection was excellent. We had nice French bread to start toasted lightly with some olive oil.
For appetizer we had the mozzarella with tomatoes in a balsamic dressing. Very good the mozzarella was imported daily from Italy. Melted in your mouth.
We also had the grilled octopus with chorizo and beans it was perfect. I really enjoyed this dish. If you wanna stop and have a glass of wine at the bar and get an order of the octopus it is a perfect match. I highly recommend it.
For my main course I had the pork rib chop was cook perfect. It came with broccoli rabe and finger potatoes. Very good. I thoroughly enjoyed the meal.
If you wanna take you girl/boyfriend, wife or husband for a romantic dinner and enjoyable meal please try this place I recommend it and you will be very happy.
Not a place to bring children you can but its more of a romantic place. Great anniversary place or to impress your love of your life.
Also great place to have a good meal.
Enjoy
The staff is excellent.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Jade H.Flushing, NY86836311Mar 19, 2010
I don't think the previous two reviews before mine are talking about the same Marmite that is listed here in Williston Park, 11596.
La Marmite in Long Island was not meerly ok. The food was high in butter as most French foods. There were tomato sauces and calamari to demonstrate the Northern Italian side of this restaurant. It was ok. I liked eating this food. What lost me was the cost of the food. None of the dishes were worth what they were charging.
The presentation of the dishes were rather disappointing. Food is slopped onto plates and sometimes the waiters made a couple of mistajkes on who had what dish.
If only their prce were lower! I would totally forgive these little mistakes here and there and everywhere. AT LEAST the waiters were really really nice. The host was really nice and the bartender was really nice. They are such nice people working at a mediocre restaurant that charges too much.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Jeff W.Williston Park, NY0971May 4, 2015
This is a tough one and will be a mixed review for sure but lets give it a go.
I live nearby and have visited La Marmite occasionally for 15 years. This weekend we went back for restaurant week with another family. We had two surprises.
The old owner sold and a new management is in place. I didn't like the old guy much so I wish him well in Miami or wherever he went. But the new menu has changed and some of my old favorites are gone including this cream puff thing (something St Honore' or whatever) I never left without eating it NEVER.
The good change was my favorite waiter from a now closed restaurant (Jose of La Pace) now works at La Marmite. Jose is the best waiter I have ever had in any restaurant certainly any that I went to in my regular rotation. So to have found him again at a local restaurant was such a pleasure. This is a man who not only remembers your favorite food, wine and even table but truly makes you feel like a welcome friend.
As far as the food goes it was good. Everyone liked it. My salmon was crispy and my burrata and asparagus appetizer was very good. Portion size was el cheapo but it's restaurant week and everyone does that - which is why I am not a fan or restaurant week. I don't find 3 choices of small entrees to be such a bargain.
But I will be back - See you soon Jose!Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0 - Ramon P.New Hyde Park, NY160427Mar 14, 2015
So i saw this place on a news special for restaurants on hillside avenue. The special featured that this restaurant has a new chef , and a completely revamped menu.
Living in the area, and always driving past this place it never called my attention. Just as the big old fashioned house on hilside. My mom decided to make a reservation and i was hesitant but ended up coming. Man what a good desiscion it was to come!
The service upon entering was very very welcoming, professional, and friendly.
The review where someone said they sat for 10 mins without a menu, that must have been before the changes to this place because we were seated, ordered and stuffed with delicious food all within a 30-40 time frame. Apps came out right away and entrees soon after.
I'd keep going, but to keep it short, try the octopus appetizer, and try the lobster carbonarra. Talk about delicious. Finished every bite.
This place has completely renewed revamped.. And everything about it cannot be missed. If your in the area, come to la marmite. Another tip u dont have to dress fancy. Came in sneakers jeans and a nike sweaterHelpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Alison B.Smithtown, NY2381022Jun 24, 2008First to Review
This place is frequented by old people and the people they take out to dinner. There are no people under 65 picking up the tab here.
The service is old-fashioned and overly correct, but in a mostly pleasant and ignorable way. Dress is formal, decor is heavy, clientele is fancy schmancy, prices are scary enough they don't stick them on the menu.
Food is solid, but not solid enough that I was blown away by anything.
Overall, it's mostly a yawn.Helpful 3Thanks 0Love this 4Oh no 0 - Joel K.Floral Park, NY83210Jun 10, 2015
We recently ate here because we received a gift certificate for Christmas. I am really sad for this restaurant. It was a Saturday night and I had called three local restaurants and all were booked. La Marmite had plenty of tables and a sparsely filled parking lot (I felt sorry for the valet).
The food and service deserve 4 stars but the place needs a makeover desperately! It is "tired" and old.
It is also expensive.
Will we go back? Probably not.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - J T.FOREST HILLS, NY10196167Apr 25, 2015
I have been following the recent reviews of this iconic Nassau County restaurant. Some were odious others right on. After eating and experiencing the service first hand I must saw that the food and wait staff were exceptional. The fois gras was simply delicious and comparable to any NYC restaurant. The rabbit was a treat for those who like this dish. I prefer a rabbit cacciatore but their brown gravy and bacon made for a fine tasting main course that was juicy and hit all the marks. And for the beef lovers there was the nine oz filet Mignon that was to die for. If u want a fine dining experience wonderful service and a very relaxing atmosphere, it's LaMarmite. U will not be disappointed. BTW they have a great French Wine list. And as I like to say about wine. It must be red and French to be consumed by discerning ladies and gentlemen. My take. JT

La Marmite is a Harlem Senegalese restaurant that has long been a favorite among those in the know.
As with many of the other West African restaurants in the city, they serve mostly stews (or "sauces," such as one of my favorites, "sauce kandia," an okra-based stew/gumbo with bits of lamb and chicken) during lunch and grilled or braised meat dishes (lamb, chicken, fish, or shrimp) and kebabs for dinner. Thiebou djenne, a complex dish of fish and fried rice cooked with vegetables that is often called the national dish of Senegal, is also available for lunch (as are variations that substitute lamb or chicken for the fish).
In recent months, I've only tasted their lunch dishes.
I've never had a bad meal here. Even their worse days are better than most other restaurants' good days.
The dining space is pretty spartan, with maybe just a half dozen tables in the main area and another few seats in another area that is partially separated from the main space, presumably for a little more privacy. No need to worry about getting a seat; I've never seen more than one other person in the restaurant when I have stopped by for lunch to go. It's also worth noting that they keep the dining area exceptionally clean, in contrast to a number of the other West African places in Manhattan.
The food is good enough to warrant 5 stars, but I'm rating them 4 stars because they may or may not have a particular menu item available on the day you visit. They usually just have one or a few of the sauces cooked up on any given day (this is very common annoyance in the West African restaurants around the city).Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0 - Karin A.Manhasset, NY218Jan 2, 2015
This restaurant is now under new management with a new staff. My advice is ... Don't bother going as it has gone seriously downhill in every way including staff, price, presentation of food and food itself which doesn't command the price! Chef needs to improve. I will never go back and I gave it 2 tries.

Four of us - few drinks, two appetizers, entrees, two espressos, no dessert and a bill for $330? For that kind of money the food should be outstanding and it definitely is not. Had a braised veal which was overcooked and drowned in sauce....$45 for the entrée. I am sorry, but for this price point the food should be amazing. There is no way I'd return here nor would I recommend La Marmite to anyone. I have not felt like I've gotten ripped off in a restaurant in a long time, but this gets close. For this price range, try the Gotham Bar and Grill in the city - outstanding amazing food in the same price range.
