A Solvay mainstay for over 100 years since Antonio and Catherine Ascioti first opened its doors for business in 1914, Ascioti's Market offered fine cuts of meat, Italian Sausage, authentic Italian cheeses, imported dried pasta and world famous meatball mix.
The original Ascioti's announced in December 2016, it would not reopen. It had been closed since the death in October of owner Philomena Ascioti.
One of her nephews, Marc Ascioti, decided to open a separate store, in the plaza that is just west of the Interstate 690 exit. He worked many years in the original market, and making the meatball mix and sausage were among his duties.
I was first introduced to Ascioti's through my wife when we first started dating. I'd seen the shop many times over the years while driving through Solvay, but never stopped in. She told me about their famous meatball mix. Now, I love me some meatballs. And I can tell you that aside from my grandmother's homemade meatballs, their mix makes the best tasting ones I've ever had. Blend of meats, perfectly spiced, absolutely nothing needs to be added to it. Take it home, roll 'em, and cook 'em.
Since then, I'd gone into Asciotis many times for other stuff as well. You'd walk in and were almost transported back to a simpler time, seeing as there aren't many butcher shops around anymore.
While the new location has made many modern improvements, including a more modern shop, a much better parking lot, and finally accepting credit cards, it still boasts a huge meat case full of various cuts of beef, pork, veal, chicken and more, as well as special cuts for braciole, meatloaf, meatballs, and sausage.
They also have some great pre made meals, and different pre packaged products from bigger brands that aren't seen in grocery stores. A wall of shelves full of Italian brand pastas and sauces, canned and jarred vegetables, and even breads. Their employees are always friendly and accommodating. Some of the stuff can be a tad pricey, but the quality is worth it.
I loved the original Asciotis, and M.Asciotis will continue their legacy. Support local, small business!Helpful 3Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Michelle P.Liverpool, NY01Mar 12, 2018
My husband heard about this establishment on the radio and told me about their meatball mix. Since I can never get my mom's recipe right no matter how hard I try, I told him to stop to get some and we could try it. Boy, am I ever glad he did! Their meatball mix is delicious! Just by opening the package, you can tell that those meatballs were going to be very tasty......and I was right! Just the right amount of seasoning is there to bring out the flavor and the meatballs were moist and delicious. And, to my surprise, they also carry gluten-free meatball mix in the frozen section of their freezer so my daughter also got to enjoy their delicious meatballs also. I can't wait to go there and check out what else I can buy! This will definitely be my go-to place from now on for my meatballs!
