Evidence that "my eyes are bigger than my stomach" at Rosemead's Medan Kitchen (at least I was rewarded with a free reusable bag and 5-pack of ramen). They opened during the pandemic, a time when social distancing and takeout was the restaurant/food industry's surviving formula, and have since been selling homemade Indonesian comfort food with flavors from the Medan area.

There is no dine in but their small store is filled to the brim with homemade Indonesian food that's ready to be taken home to enjoy. From appetizers to main enteees to sweets, there are so many options to choose from.

Be sure to support your local business and check out their IG @medankitcheninc for their rotating daily menu ahead of your visit!

We bought: Nasi Ayam Medan (Medanese Chicken Rice), Nas Uduk Komplit (Indonesian Coconut Steamed Rice Set), Chicken Satay, Kering Kentang Teri Kacang (Spicy Potato with Anchovy & Peanuts, Rujak Serut (Shredded Fruit Salad), & Rujak

Cool concept but pricing is a bit ridiculous. I think they stock items from local Indonesian businesses / ghost kitchens and whatnot so not everything is made by them. I'd love to try everything but that doesn't seem feasible. Prices range from $14-$20 for a meal. There are two registers so it's a bit confusing... staff don't seem to really even know what's going on? or what their products are??? No one really explained what the differences in the lines are. I usually hate leaving less than 5 star reviews on businesses that seem to be family owned / small businesses but Seems like this place is popular enough to take it.

This place is hyped up, basically just lunchboxes of various dishes that you could just grab and go. Was super packed on a saturday around noon.

I got a chicken three ways dish. Sausage, char siu bbq style chicken, and a stewed drumstick, an egg... came with a few sauces... a hot sauce and a brown sauce and a soup. It was a single drumstick... tiny af. smallest drumstick i've ever seen in my life lol. Everything tasted ok... protein that you get is pretty minimal... Soup was extremely salty. Hot sauce is extremely hot.

I also got a chicken satay skewers dish. I think 6 or 5 skewers, a peanut satay sauce, and some rice cakes? the cashier didn't even know what it was. Pretty underwhelming overall. was $14 for each of the dishes.

Might try something else next time.

Go there at lunch time. They sell out quickly.. if you go for dinner there's only limited options.

The only drawback is prices.. high prices. Even the grocery prices are more expensive than at 99 Ranch but it's the price of convenience I guess.

Watch for item prices. I was at the cashier and got taken aback at a dish costing me $17 , that dish didn't have price tag on the table. If I had known, I would have picked other dishes.

Medan Kitchen is the only place I'm aware of in SGV and even all of Los Angeles that comes close to authentic Indonesian food. I've only been to Bali once but this place has all the popular Indonesian dishes that I loved eating in Bali. I kinda get myself in trouble and over buy desserts and entrees when I come here because everything looks so good and it's so easy to just grab and place in the basket because it's all ready to go! My go to here is the Nasi Bungkus, you can order it at the cashier and they pack it up quickly in the back for you. Always delicious and the portion is a lot, 1 order is 2 meals for me.

I was craving for kaya toast but could not find the spread for sale near me. I was in SGV and went to Medan Kitchen. They have so much food and snacks for sale! The store was neatly organized and everything has a label to identify the food for sale.
I finally got my kaya toast fix!

Keep in mind that this is foremost a market and the meals you will pick up here are more like togo lunch boxes. The workers are pleasant and helpful despite how busy they were. There's a few seats outside that is meant for lunch rush to eat and go, thus the turnover is pretty quick.

I tried the Nasi Uduk Complit and a chicken fried noodle type dish that I didn't get the name of. I like the strong flavors of the beef rendang and the boiled egg. The fried chicken has a lemongrass? flavor to it that I quite enjoy. Too bad that and the tofu tempeh wasn't as strong of a flavor as the other parts of the dish, but overall it was still good. Be careful of the sambal and chili because it really packs a punch. Highlight of the meal was the pouch of anchovy and peanut. I could eat that as snack or with a whole bowl of rice. The chicken fried noodle was okay. The soup came with 2 meatballs in there and the crunchy chips added a nice texture to the noodles.
