Mofongo Cafe

Nashville is playing catch up in the global restaurant arena and Merengue Cafe is a female owned entry for Cuban food. It's casual, featuring a daily hot bar in addition to its regular menu. The portions are huge -- so big, we like to split a plate. On our last visit, the short ribs were a little tough, but the flavor was good. After three visits, I haven't been dazzled yet, but didn't walk away hungry either.

Excellent food! Probably the best authentic Latin American food I've had in Nashville so far. The menu is mostly in Spanish, but it has English written smaller below.

You order your food buffet style (like at Chipotle), and then pay and get your drink. Everything we ordered was spot on! I already want to go back

upon entering the front door, it felt as if i'd traveled out of the country. from the vibe to the customer service. and the food. oh my. better than even i could have expected.

this is in my top 5 dining experiences here. definitely going back and taking other people with me.

You can definitely tell they cook with love, from the feeling you get when you walk into to place to the first bite you put In your mouth, Bursting with natural flavors and much too choose from I'd definitely recommend this to anyone wanting to satisfy a craving.

I had a completely different experience here than other reviewers, unfortunately. I went here with a meetup.com group for dinner (about 16 of us), so we had a larger party. But, they have a Chipotle-style set up where you can create your meal from a line of prepared items behind a glass, or you can order separately from a menu. Typically, this setup lends itself pretty well to larger groups, but my food took an hour to come out.

I ordered from the menu and initially asked for a Cuban sandwich but was told they didn't have those (need to take them off the menu), so I got Tostones con Camarones al Ajillo (fried plantains with garlic shrimp). I enjoyed the shrimp, but the plantains were very bland. People who ordered the buffet-style meals didn't get their orders for a while either though, which was odd because the whole idea of that setup is to make the order as you go.

Maybe they were just having an off night because it seems like others had great experiences, but this is a no-go for me.

This is probably my favorite Dominican food restaurant. Amazing food with amazing flavor. Won't be disappointed.
