Newgate Gallery

I needed a couple of posters framed with particular requirements, and Newgate Gallery came up recommended on Yelp. Having since had them framed and with them now hanging proudly on my walls, I can say the high praise is accurate.

They gave me a quote on the spot, showed me a range of framing options and took my requirements on board, and had everything finished and ready by the end of the week with an email notification once they were ready to pick up.

I'm not exactly experienced with getting things framed, but I can say I'd have no reservations with getting Newgate to do anything further I'd need framing in future.

I came in to get some postcards framed and these guys did a fantastic job. They helped me with the layout, design, and did not try to upsell me on anything. Quality work, professional service, and reasonable prices.

It's all relative, right? Right.

I've had many things framed in my homeland (USA). It's always an expensive endeavor. Usually taking weeks (or months). Painful. Why? I don't really know and can't say exactly why, but maybe there is one framer per county that serves all the needs. It seems that way.

So I was dreading getting a print framed in London. Not known for being particularly inexpensive or quick with some matters...I feared the worst.

And my fears were without merit! Last Monday I popped by Newgate Gallery with my odd -shaped (rectangle) print. A very helpful chap assisted me with picking out a nice frame and going over some matting options (this makes it more pricey, of course). I chose to just go with a straight frame, no matting.

Total price: 81.36. WHAT!? Yes.

Originally, I thought he said 381.36 and I kind of resigned myself to thinking "well I guess I'll just tack it to the wall with gum." But no, under 100 quid! In the States this would've cost me close to $200, at least.

Even better? It was done in TWO DAYS. They emailed me promptly upon finishing the frame job, and I could've picked it up as early as Wednesday. Yes, TWO DAYS! Amazing. I didn't make it back in until a week later, and was helped again by the same friendly guy. He rang me up, packaged my framed print into a bag of sorts that I could carry home and I was on my way.

It's now hanging nicely over the mantle, and I'll be returning to Newgate Gallery for my future framing needs. Don't be put off by the name, it's really more of a framing outpost than a "gallery."

A small place, and the name 'Gallery' is a little misleading as they are really a picture framing outfit. They do have a range of prints for sale, though many are piled on the floor as the wall space is very limited but the prices are pretty good, especially when you take into account that they come framed.

I have had a few things framed here, the whole experience has been good. They have advised me on mount and frame colours, sizes etc. and the final product is great.

It is pretty expensive, whether that be simply because I am a bit out of touch with how much it costs to get something framed or whether this place trully is asking over the odds I'm unsure, but it does hit the pocket pretty hard.

Still, my pictures look better in the frames than they did lying in a drawer unframed and un-gazed upon.
