I've eaten here a number of times over the years. Always at lunch. This restaurant is located in the historic section of downtown Gulfport. The restaurant appears to have undergone an upgrade some I was here last.
I got the red beans and rice lunch special. Comes with a drink and slice of cake for a very reasonable $9. The red beans were home made, cooked perfectly and well seasoned without being salty. The andouille was chopped into the beans and served on top. Comes with a homemade biscuit that tastes a little like a Hawaiian roll.
I chose the lemon cake... Nice little complement to the meal.
Note: You can substitute fried catfish for the andouille. Also a good choice.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - 22521576912Aug 5, 2013
Port City Café offers friendly service and a decent breakfast.
I guess I am spoiled by the large variety of restaurants in New Orleans and the surrounding cities. You would think I would remember that not everywhere has that many places to choose from, but I am a relatively slow learner. That, coupled with the large amount of time it had been since I had visited the Gulf Coast and I was left trying out a bunch of new places.
I love eating out for breakfast. It is the one meal that I don't like cooking, and like to find good breakfast food wherever I go. The reviews for Port City seemed pretty good so we headed there one morning. The place was relatively empty when we arrived so we were promptly seated. Our server was great at suggesting items, very friendly, and even offered to change the TV station to help distract the younger members of my party.
I was excited to try the biscuits, as I had read so many good things about them in other reviews. Besides the biscuits and gravy, I also ordered an omelet for my meal. The food was good, but not great. I think it is comparable to an IHOP or similar chain. I expected more based on the reviews, but maybe it is better at lunch time.Helpful 6Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0 - Mike M.Santa Monica, CA66245Jan 29, 2018

Changing my opinion about this place after today.
1. The menus are filthy. I'm talking old and stained and downright gross.
2. My biggest deal breaker is an establishment that brings out everyone's order in intervals. They were not busy at all and there were only three of us. It's uncomfortable and nobody likes to eat while others sit there. Total deal breaker.
3. The food is nothing to write home about. Absolutely just okay.
4. Slow. Soooooo slow to get food. Wouldn't want to be here if the place was busy.
5. Mom ordered fish tacos. They came out and said they were out of fish tacos. WTF? That's ridiculous.
I didn't even want to pick up my burger or fries because I touched the disgusting menu. I tried to eat with a fork.
Oh well.
I will say they are very nice. That's the two stars. No additional reason other then friendliness.
If you want an absolute mediocre dining experience this is the place for you.
Tip- the entire place is open to the outside so there is the occasional fly you must keep shooing away lol.Helpful 5Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0Oct 3, 2015Previous reviewWell the boyfriend wanted to try the cafe and even with the negative reviews I just kept my mouth shut lol. Turns out the place was pretty good. It wasn't busy yet but it's a nice little place thats way bigger thenit looks. It almost looks like a sports bar but I can't remember if there is beer in there or not. The food came out hot and it was really good. I had the muffaletta and it was served hot (the way I like it) and it was decent. The olives were kinda hard which was weird but the flavor of the sandwich was good. It was no New Orleans sandwich but it is also 2 minutes from my house. The frys were hot and the server was consistently giving us refills so overall much better then expected. Boyfriend got a bulldog sandwich which was hot pot roast and mom got the fried po boy. All good. Give the place a try. Not too sure why all the bad reviews.

Happened upon this restaurant this morning and was very pleased. The breakfast is truly amazing. The establishment is very clean, the staff are very nice and the atmosphere is extremely pleasant. Clean bathrooms, as well, which are always a definite plus. Nice assortment of items on the breakfast menu. The shrimp and grits were truly the best I've ever had. The breakfast platter was very, very good. Both meals cooked to perfection and delicious. I would definitely suggest this restaurant for breakfast. Cannot wait to return for breakfast and try lunch in the future.

The portions are big (both my husband and I asked for to go boxes) and flavorful but SALTY. We had the Chicken Parmesan and the Eggplant Parmesan - the chicken was much more salty. There is no atmosphere to speak of (we were seated on the bar side) but we were greeted warmly and the service was good.
Not a place to take a date or if you have high blood pressure, but fine for a filling lunch.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Emily P.Durham, NC011Sep 17, 2015
The second-worst meal I've ever had. Ever.
We ordered coffee, which didn't arrive for almost 20 minutes. After that amount of time, our server came out with one cup for our table of five, saying the coffee machine broke. That one cup was undrinkably bitter, so we weren't heartbroken about the missing four. (Which, incidentally, didn't come for another 20 minutes, after which we cancelled our order.)
After about 30 minutes, the server returned to tell us that they had no tortillas, so they couldn't make a breakfast burrito. (This realization took 30 minutes.)
While we were waiting, a man came into the dining room and inexplicably started loudly nailing a taxidermy fish to the wall. So, that was a thing.
The food (minus the breakfast burrito) came after about 40 minutes, which was remarkable considering we were literally the only people in the restaurant. The best way I can describe the look of the food was "beige." Literally everything on everyone's plate was the same color. Eggs, toast, biscuits, grits, cheese food product... Beige. The biscuits, incidentally, were clearly Pillsbury, and burned on the bottom. Everything was greasy, bland, and dense.
The last straw came when I bit down on a large chunk of dishwashing detergent in my grits. That was it. Never again.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0 - Skip S.Sierra Vista Southeast, AZ966727Apr 11, 2016
Six of us enjoyed breakfast at Port City Cafe. The food was very good and everything came out well cooked and correct the first time. The restaurant is very roomy so you are not crammed or being disturbed by others conversations.
The service from our server, Tiffany, was incredibly nice as she was really on top of her game bringing everything so quickly and making sure we had everything we needed especially for the kids.
The local decor was also interesting seeing a lot of nostalgia from the area including an amazing before and after panoramic photo of the mess caused by Katrina.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Katie R.Durham, NC024Jul 18, 2015
Horrible horrible horrible. Over the hour and a half it took to get our food, they slowly delivered two of the three cups of coffee we ordered. The grits were terrible and eggs unevenly cooked. Avoid.
Edit: three of us got stomach illness off the foodHelpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Nov 2, 2015
Port City Cafe may claim to have great breakfast, but when my mom and I came here, the breakfast was okay. The portion of the food is not as filling as we wanted for a big Sunday morning breakfast. The server wasn't quite attentive with the quality of service. I might or might not come back to this restaurant. I'm just saying that service and quantity of food needs an improvement.
