Portola Cafe Deli Pizza Burgers

Should have read the reviews beforehand.

Stopped here for a quick lunch with my 4yo when driving through town. We don't live in the area. $47 for two Turkey sandwiches, a water bottle, apple juice and a bag of Doritos. Sandwiches were literally Turkey, cheese and pickles. I asked and was charged for the $4 avocado upgrade () only to be told after the fact they don't have avocado, would you like bacon. I mean not really, but okay. Was not offered a receipt. Everything felt off.

Sandwiches were sub par, meat and cheese were room temperature. My daughter refused to eat it. Money down the toilet.

LOVE this place. Probably my favorite pizza in the area. I almost didn't want to write a review because I don't want too many people to find out about it ;)

Great for my kids too. Family who runs it seems super nice. Not too much of a wait either.

If you don't live nearby, it's a fun little drive, then eat pizza while sitting outside. Or can always stop while on a bike ride or walk.

I read some of the reviews after eating here and I had a much better experience.
I was the only customer when I showed up and the gentleman behind the counter treated me like it. Very friendly, personable, offering suggestions and patient while I looked at the menu board for what they served.
I decided on the Turkey Avocado wrap with fries and it was very good! Perhaps a bit too much salt on the fries was my only minor complaint no biggie. Actually, another small complaint was the prices were a bit higher than I would expect, but oh well.
I would definitely return if I'm back in the area during lunch. The other items on the wall looked very good!

It's unfortunate reading through these 1 Star reviews. I think this place is misunderstood. Yes, they charge premiums for their food, as they should for a small mom and pop cafe navigating through a pandemic which forced reduced business and income. Shouldn't we want to support our local small businesses and help them succeed rather than slamming them for charging an extra couple bucks?

The average cost of a home in Portola Valley is $4 million... and yet most of the complaints are about the cost of a cooked-to-order meal? Ok, I do agree that beverage costs are exorbitant, but most people won't even blink at a $5 Starbucks drink. It's all relative.

Give them chance; stop in and try the Philly cheese steak sandwich and fries! Yummmm! I always ask for extra crispy fries ;). It's a $19 lunch, and well worth it.

I have given this place a few tries, but never again. The owner is a curmudgeon. Not only is he rude to customers but I've also overheard him speaking badly to his staff. The place smells like rancid oil when you walk in and food is just not good. I'm all for supporting small businesses but if you're going to charge premium prices, sell premium products. Do better for your community and definitely do better for your staff who help keep your business running. I can't understand how this place has survived so long. Any other food option in town is a better option than here.

Wow, greatest tasting burger in town. The BLT, fries. Everything is great along with great service and friendly staff.

I don't even know where to start with this guy and this business.. I just had quite possibly the worst experience of my life after a crazy hike I stopped in to get 2 slices of pizza and a 2 CLEARLY marked 99cent Arizona Iced Teas lol however I was quickly informed they do not sell slices for lunch no big deal I'll just take the 2 Arizona Iced Teas please, he charges me $2.99 per Arizona Iced Tea which comes to $7 with "tax" on tax free items L o L sorry we have a $10 minimum to use a debit or credit card.. then I say that I don't want to buy another $3 Arizona Iced Tea to reach the minimum and he looks out at my car and says but that's a nice Tesla you have out there.. like WTF? I say what does that have to do with you triple charging me for these Arizona Iced Teas at which time he says it has to do with all these cheap customers coming into my store driving fancy cars complaining about my prices! WHAT?! Are you insane my brother this is how you treat your customers? On top of it a first time customer with New York plates who is visiting?!?! NEVER AGAIN. He then snatched my credit card out of my hand and processed it for the Arizona Iced Teas a non taxable item at a rate of $2.99 plus tax per Iced Tea.. I paid $6.58 for 2 cans of Arizona Iced Tea.. wow brother your lucky I don't call the Attorney General on this tax scam AVOID THIS PLACE AT ALL COSTS. Go elsewhere. Trust me.

Talk about inflation! Was in a hurry and just grabbed a small bag of chips and a soda, when the lady at the register charged me 9 dollars I was taken aback. I get things are more expensive as of late, but how do you sleep at night charging these types of prices

Anyhow- minus stars for the $4.00+ Kind bar I grabbed bc I was starving. That's a HUGE markup. How is it possible a factory made kind bar is a few dollars away from a sandwich or made to order food?!

I said I would be back in my previous review and I went! Got a bacon cheeseburger and fries. Bomb. The bacon is really good. The ingredients are fresh and everything is made to order. Definitely check this spot out if you are in the area and I will for sure be stopping by next time I am as well!
