I totally understand what all the hype was about this place. The food is delicious, and the service is great! This place is locally owned and the environment was very welcoming.
My friend recommended this place and it's 2 mins away from my apartment so I decided to give it a shot. For about $8 I couldn't believe how much food they gave me and it was SO good!
I got the beef burrito and cheesy enchilada (comes with a side of rice and beans, I chose black beans instead of pinto) and 2 tortillas on the side (I chose corn). They even offered to put the heater in front of us (it was freezing cold out!) which was super nice. I didn't finish my food because of the amount so I took it home. This place will definitely be a new regular for me!Helpful 3Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0 - Jun 9, 2017
A coworker and I decided to venture out to this neck of the woods to fulfill our Mexican foods craving. Read a lot of positive reviews of this location and finally had the chance to try this place out! We came here for lunch during work. First off, know how to parallel park because it is in the city and by the VCU stores/university.
I decided on the carnitas plate combo. It contains pulled pork with lettuce and guacamole and Mexican salsa. The combos automatically come with rice, beans, and a choice of flour/corn tortilla. We decided to eat outside on their open patio. I honestly thought that the food here was a-okay. I don't know if it was my order, but it did not hit the spot for me. I felt like it was missing something, like the sauce or something. I'd like to give this another shot and try a different dish because I've read so many good reviews on this place. I will say that the major downfall of this place was that I could've seriously eaten more. So...we then ended up going over to Red Eye Cookie to get some cookies to fill up on.Helpful 4Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Tyrone B.San Diego, CA2561430Apr 8, 2018
In San Diego, Mexican food joints are plentiful! I had a craving for Mexican food and based on some of the help reviews, I figured I'd give this place a try.
I ordered the carne asada fries, which is my go to when it comes to Mexican food. Sadly I was disappointed.
The best part of the dish is perhaps the fries. They are nice and crispy to the point where you take a bite, they give off this nice crunch sound. I think I would've truly enjoyed this if it didn't have refried beans on it. I must've missed this part when I ordered it, but instead of refried beans, I would've preferred more meat. Back in San Diego, this same dish would be about the same price, but the portions would definitely be a lot more. There was also a small scoop of guacamole that was placed on one corner of the dish whereas back home, it would've been all over my plate.
The dish itself is perhaps good for those without much access to other Mexican food joints, but coming from a connoisseur of Mexican food (lol I know right?) where it's in abundance in San Diego, this dish felt like it missed out on a number of things. Portion size was an issue, ditch the refried beans and add more meat, be more generous with the guacamole.
The service was great. The gentleman helping me was very patient when I was figuring out what I wanted to order. Also, it hadn't dawned on me to grab any utensils, napkins or hot sauce until my meal was brought out to me and he mentioned that they were to the tight of the counter. I appreciated that.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Lindsey S.Richmond, VA385143Mar 20, 2018
So I ran over to this place one day after work after perusing the reviews left by others. I was excited at the opportunity to have some authentic food to tuck in. The place is on the VCU campus tucked away in the same place one of my favorite Vietnamese places used to be. I walked in and was greeted by all the right smells. I could see large plates of tacos and nachos being handed out. I made my order for a couple different tacos as well as the carne Assad nachos that a number of people recommended. I was underwhelmed.
For the money, the nachos were scant with toppings and not really all that tasty. It was all one note. I doused the nachos in salsa verde to try to give it some kick and that helped quite a bit but it just wasn't all that great. The tacos were a mostly different story. They give you nice portions for the price and the meat was moist and mostly flavorful. I don't think that I would go running back, but if I am ever in that neck of the woods and hungry I would definitely sit back down for some tacos. I do have to say that the owners were stand up people and very friendly.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Nicole P.Chicago, IL1473257Feb 4, 2018
So I wanted to treat my boyfriend to a nice lunch on Friday. Asked him what he wanted and he said tacos. Alright cool, we came here before and we loved it, but I wanted to give it one more try before giving it a rating.
Come here instead of Chipotle that's one block over! You're supporting local business and you get a lot of bang for your buck!
The charm of this place is quaint, simple, and focused on the food. There's several tables inside and a nice porch area on the outside (but of course we ate in because it was freezing that day.) I feel like it's best to just eat at the restaurant, you're only there for 20 minutes max eating your food and it comes out so quick as well. The woman helping us behind the register was so sweet and helpful since I was having some difficulties picking what taco I wanted.
To the food! We got chips and salsa to share, nice serving for the both of us. We mixed the two sauces to make some super sauce that went well with the chips.
The boyfriend got the Carne Asado Burrito ($7). LOADED with meat! They do not skimp on the good stuff that's for sure. I had two tacos (Barbacoa, $5 for two) YES, lots of meat again, not a lot of filler. I'm thinking that two wouldn't be enough, but it was the perfect amount with the chips that we had. (Next time I'm going to try three different tacos...) The taste of the tacos weren't overpowering , meat was flavorful throughout every bite. The soft tortillas tasted like corn tortillas, and also tasted like they are made in-house.
We already decided a couple of months ago that we were going to Rosita's Taco Shop instead of chains (aka. Chipotle for the same or more $$$ and then not get any meat with a lot of filler...) And I recommend people to do the same if you're in the VCU area!Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Liana A.Richmond, VA14157224May 10, 2017
Excellente! We ALMOST went to Chipotle for lunch when I did a quick search for the best tacos on yelp and discovered this gem.
Reasons to eat here: Carne Asada everything, outdoor patio, affordable downtown prices and great customer service.
My colleague is a die-hard loaded fries fan, so once we saw the pics of the famous carne asada fries, we knew we had to see what this was all about. They are loaded with beans, guac, sour cream, pico, cheese and love.
From our conversations with the gentleman behind the counter, this is where all the West Coast folks come to get their Mexican fix in Downtown. With their Carne Asada fries being their best seller.
I had the Carne Asada bowl and was equally satisfied with my choice. Though, I will say.. the next time I go, I will skip the beans. They serve refried pinto beans (I think) and I'm just not crazy about the flavor. BUT other than that, I can definitely vouch for Rosita's in saying that it's worth the try instead of the usual Chipotle which is just a block or so away. #EatLocalHelpful 5Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - 125241460Oct 12, 2017
I stopped at Rosita's for lunch. I was not greeted, or asked if I'd visited before, informed about the specials, etc. In other words, the servuce was very bland. I felt like I'd just walked into a fast-food shop. Order, pay, go!
I decided on the beef taco salad (~$10 incl tax). They did not have ground beef so I opted for shredded beef. I asked about adding a chili relleno, but was told they only come in combos.
Even though I ordered dine-in, the food was delivered in a Styrofoam to-go container and the water cup was tiny. The shredded beef had a nice flavor, but it wasnt quite shredded. It was more like someone put pot roast on my taco salad. I would also have liked more sour cream and guacamole, which was delicious with lots of lime flavor. The fried tortilla was very tasty. I did not like the red sauce. The sauces weren't labeled, so I'm not even sure what kind of sauce was in the bottle.
The location is small, but that's standard for the VCU area. For being in such a condensed area, they do have a nice outside seating area with six tables though only 3 have umbrellas/covering. I greatly enjoyed the outdoor atmosphere.
IMHO, I may give it another chance. Maybe I ordered the wrong dish, but a $10, serve yourself pot roast salad was not what I had in mind for a local restaurant with 4+ stars. It could just be a good place for college students to get cheap tacos. Your mileage may vary!Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Tiffany N.Manassas, VA65712Dec 8, 2016
Went here today for the first time for lunch and it did not disappoint! Upon walking in, we were instantly greeted by the super nice cashier! She was really helpful in explaining the menu for us. It took a little while to decide because they have so many options but she was not bothered at all. I decided on the carnitas plate and my boyfriend got the carne asada fries.
We sat at the tables, it's a really casual place, after making sure to get the sauces up front at the counter. We didn't have to wait long at all for our food and were so surprised at the amount we got. For $9 each, the amount of food was crazy. My carnitas plate came with rice, beans, lettuce, salsa, two slices of avocado, and two corn tortillas (although you can pick flour). The carnitas was so tender, most, and delicious! Everything else on the plate really complimented everything. I do wish there was a little more of a spice kick in the meat, but that's just personal preference.
My boyfriends food was massive. The fries were super crispy and were topped with refried beans, cheese, sour cream, salsa, and guacamole. So so so good, I was stealing from his box!
Definitely think I've finally found my go to taco spot.
It's inexpensive, good quality, and speedy. Highly recommend!Helpful 3Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0 - 98310581Nov 8, 2017
I ordered 3 tacos, one al pastor, and two carne asada's. The carne asada's were my favorite by far. Although, the al pastors were a little to dry for me, which was kind of disappointing. Nevertheless, I would still come back to eat here, it's not the best tacos I've ever had but they are decent.
The space inside is kind of small, but there is an outdoors area for guest to sit at. The employees there were also very nice.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Kamille P.Richmond, VA521811377Nov 2, 2016
Tried Rosita's not too long after the "coming soon" changed to "now open" on the sign outside.
There's a lot of different options, so it took me a while to decide on what to eat. After much deliberation, I decided to order the grilled fish and fried fish tacos. They both had good flavor, though I preferred the latter. The food isn't too greasy or salty. That being said, I also tried some of my friend's rolled tacos and it didn't have too much going on flavor-wise, but salsa could probably fix that. Also, the food is very satisfying - I ate almost four hours ago and I'm still full.
I think the best part is the price. It's really inexpensive. We were in awe over how low the prices are. My entire order of two tacos, a side of rice, and a drink all cost under $10. Better yet, the rolled tacos were $3.25 for three.
It's quick, cheap, and good. Excited to see what they have in store in the future!Helpful 4Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0
