Q:
Can you do alterations on pleather pants?
A:
We can if the material is heavy and sturdy enough, we need to see it to determine if our machines can work properly with the material. Please bring it if you can.

I bought this leather jacket almost 20 years ago at the San Diego Leather factory. I was looking for the perfect fit with sizes like men's suits in even sizes instead of the generic small, medium, large, x-large, etc.
I ended up with this G1 Navy Military Cowhide Leather Bomber Jacket with Plain Collar in a size 42 made in the USA. I had them custom make aviator wings with my lasts name which velcrows onto the left side. The jacket is heavy duty made of thick cowhide and I've worn it on motorcycle rides. It's held up amazingly well for it's age and almost looks like new. I like the hidden outside side pockets on cold days and the large inside pocket. I highly recommend San Diego Leather Factory.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Jose P.San Diego, CA492012Apr 21, 2023
Excellent customer service. Family-owned store and endless inventory of jackets. Brought my leather jacket for an alteration and I was very satisfied with the end result. A small detail that for some can go unnoticed: They put a leather strip on the zipper pull which my jacket originally didn't had. And by the way, the jacket I brought was not purchased at their store. Support local businesses and don't let these types of stores disappear.

Just left the shop, and had to write this review for a leather alteration that went poorly.
I called ahead of time detailing that I had a leather belt I wanted fixed. I needed several inches of it removed, so that I could use the remnants to complete another job. A very simple job.
1. Cut off the leather
2. Hand me the leather removed.
Two steps. Simple, right?
Apparently not. They handed me the now altered belt, and I asked them where the five-inch remnant was.
"Oh, it has to be in the belt pouch right?"
Me: No.
"Oh, we'll check."
Me: Ok.
"Sorry, we checked and our leatherworker must've thrown it away. We can check for it on Monday (Currently Saturday). We're about to close."
They offered me a spare piece of leather, but I specified I needed this one in particular to match the belt. What good would an off-color, scrap of leather do me?
Honestly, terrible service and a negative experience overall. I have very little hope that my leather belt piece will turn up on Monday, but will update the review if it does.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Michael M.Bristol, PA02Mar 2, 2023

I still can't sleep thinking about how disrespectful these people are on the phone. Instead of going down there and getting myself thrown back in prison I guess I can leave a review.
I know that people live off their reputation and like to boast about how many loyal customers they have. But this place is obviously has seen it's best days.
I called and asked a simple question after 10 Freaking days and they got upset.
Me: Can I get an ETA on my leather repair?
Them: We got your phone number, don't call us. We are short staff. Maybe tomorrow but who knows. People showed up ahead of you okay pal?
What the? Are you serious?
I call back the next day.
Me: Any chance on today? It's getting pretty cold and I use it a ton.
Them: Didn't we tell you not to call us? We are working on it and we will let you know. Nobody is gonna leave your stuff laying around.
I'm telling you. I had never been to prison. I would be on my way.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - May 26, 2018
Well I finally get here after nearly 40 years of knowing of this shop. They have special made me about 6 leather flying type jackets over these years. I have 3 remaining at home and wear occasionally. I actually buried one of my best ever pal dogs, Frank, in one that he often slept on when he flew with me during cargo hauling days.
They can special make any type jacket you can dream up right here in-house. Lots of colors and types of leathers. I wanted a special color lining put in one of past, so sent to them and they did it beautifully. The quality here is better than many shops offer. And this is a pretty large store with a lot of ready made choices and sizes.
Definitely a 'Best Of'.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0Business owner information

got a police leather jacket from their website. noticed the imported versions of the cop leather jackets were half price and stated as discontinued.
thought that would be a great deal since other than being imported, they were the same style as the U.S. made versions.
was very happy with the jacket, hung up in closet for wear when weather got cold. a month or so later took out to wear, put it on, and later in the day i happened to look down.
all the corners of the leather, such as on the pocket flaps, outer pocket leather, etc, were frayed and coming apart at the point/edges. you could see where the top layer of leather was completely worn off and some frayed gray leather was visible under the thick outer brown surface. also visible at spots where the thread went through sewing holes on the jacket.
SO this was the reason they were unloading these jackets at a discount. rather than discount them somewhere that handled defective merchandise, or label the reason for the discount, that being defective leather, san diego leather sold these and i assume hoped their customers would, like me, not find out or notice until too late.
well, i'm no longer a customer any more. never will be again.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0Oct 5, 2018Previous reviewi've been aware of san diego leather for over a decade as almost a cult legendary maker of aviation, military and motorcycle jackets. i had been quite a collector of military jackets at one time. i had never purchased theirs but could see from pictures and reviews elsewhere they were prized by military personnel who purchased them as legit spec proper personnel wear, as well as those appreciating military spec jackets.
i had moved past leather jackets, having way too many to wear, but one i had never purchased was a legit cop motorcycle leather jacket. i'd gotten a different brand, used, on ebay from the Chicago pd, but it had some wear, and badge holes, so i eventually sold it. then last week i saw a san diego leather ad for a cop jacket on one of the blogs i read, and of course punched it.
there was the jacket i had always wanted, pretty much a calif CHP style, basically an A2 top with a G1 bi-swing back, no epaulets, but all leather with no cloth cuffs as in the mil versions, and a cinched leather waist, no cloth like the military A2 or G-1. the collar was snap down. these are thick cowhide, very dark almost a black, but actually brown. really a great piece of police gear for motorcycle patrol.
i was no longer in the mood or finances to spend $500 for jackets, and their U.S. san diego factory made ones were $450. while a fan of U.S. made, this price simply meant i was not going to get it...but then i noticed they were clearing out their imported versions, which were the same except built overseas. at $195, i had to have it. and even more enticing, i found them selling these on ebay at a couple of dollars less...maybe $5 or so. i purchsed there.
well, receiving this jacket was mind blowing. i got it 2 days after paying. granted, i'm in california too, but that was very gratifying.
more gratifying was opening up the package and inspecting this gear. i still haven't found the tag where these are made yet, but i've had many many mil/aviation/replica vintage mil and all sorts of plain old motorcycle jackets that were made in the U.S. and everywhere. this 'cleared out' imported jacket was flawless with the beautiful rugged construction of the best most expensive jackets i've ever purchased.
on top of that, it looked better, much better, than the online photos showed. their photos could use some updating, not for accuracy, but they are a bit old fashioned, so seeing how incredible this jacket was in fact, was extremely enjoyable and just what you hope of any purchase of anything that you prize.
this will be hard not to wear everywhere, even in the summer heat. i have removed the very warm zip in liner so i can wear it everywhere, and it's very comfortable. looks superb, and feels the same. i can't thank these guys enough for making a discount purchase a real gold find. i'm trying to weed myself off of anymore jackets, but if i do give in, i will make the pilgrimage down to San Diego to their showroom, and really treat myself.
i cannot praise my purchase enough. thanks! - Apr 3, 2019
Came here with a friend, while visiting from Oakland. They have been coming here for years. I lurked through the store, snooping through every female item that was in the store. I tried on every leather coat or vest that looked I catching enough to want to try on. A few of the colors were a little bit dated like old-school Wilsons Leather from 1989. However it was still worth trying on. Out of at least 10 jackets that I tried on, I actually felt that one was up to date with fit in color to where I wanted to buy it. Original price $799. The now price is $299. I thought to myself they give me a deal like knock $100 off, I'll get this coat. So I said it to the side to continue to look at items and potentially purchase this coat. Then I started seeing various duffle bags. These duffel bags were so nice. For quality of leather was good. And the price, $45, come on now you can't beat that. I put that to the side. I'm getting that. Then I see this hat. Reminds me of a Stetson hat. I go to try it on but my hair just got done, so I didn't try them. But I knew it looked cute. However I knew that it was going to be at least $100 so I knew I wasn't going to get it, but I still was interested in it. I'll look at the price. Why is it $20? Are you serious! I put that to the side. Then I saw this pouch that connects the two belt loops that was hella cute. I think that was only like $10. That got put to the side. Get to the counter I see this big freezer bag size of letter scraps for $5. I must buy those for what reason I don't know. Just a simple fact that I see scraps of leather for $5 was good enough for me to buy. I ended up getting that bag for free because of the frequency of my friends visits to the store. Grand total plus tax $95.
