Takoyaki is a savory Japanese street food in the shape of a ball (about the same size as a golf ball) and is cooked in a special cast iron griddle to get its signature shape. This addictively delicious bite-sized eat originated in the Osaka prefecture of Japan in 1935. Takoyaki is made up of four main parts: the slightly crisp shell, doughy inside and a piece of tako (octopus) tucked inside and of course, topping that range from traditional to creative. Still confused? Run to your nearest Takoyaki Yamachan to order a fresh batch and try them for yourself!

Extremely delicious Takoyaki! It's perfect if you want to have a quick bite or something between meals. They keep making new batches of Takoyaki, so you know they are freshly made. We ordered the regular 12 pieces, and when we asked about their spicy mayo, they gave us two different mayo dips, both delicious and SPICY in a good way!
While ordering the Takoyaki, the lady asked how our day was. She said that it's even better after having Takoyaki! That's exactly how we felt, and it speaks volumes about how good their food is.
The Takoyaki is soft on the inside, with octopus in each one, along with Takoyaki sauce, bonito flakes, and mayo! All the flavors work super well together, and I am totally satisfied and happy with the quality.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - 2725099Apr 21, 20241 check-in
I love takoyaki and this is my first time trying out Yamachan. The takoyaki here are kinda on the bigger side and it comes with 8. I got the regular takoyaki and it was yummy! I'm only giving it 4 stars as the takoyaki wasn't crispy.
Though it was kinda soggy, I still enjoyed it. Next time I want to try the negi mayo one. The food also came out fast and it was cool to watch them make the food.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 2 - Mar 14, 20242 check-ins
I think this is the only place in the city that only has takoyaki on the menu. And they do a great job dishing them out.
I'm pretty basic, so my go to is the regular. But it's a classic! The sauce has a good balance of savory to sweetness. And the dough is a bit crispy on the outside, and soft and chewy on the inside. Plus the octopus adds to the chewiness.
I've also had the ponzu one. It's loaded with the ponzu mayo, bonito flakes, and green onions. I scraped off some because it's a bit too much for me, but it was still very flavorful. I really like the acidity of the ponzu with the takoyaki. I think if they went lighter with the mayo, it wouldn't feel so heavy.
There are other options on the menu plus combos. The lines get very long, especially on the weekends, but it does move fast. The employees are fast and efficient. And friendly.
My only issue is that there isn't much seating inside and it can get very noisy. If you plan on eating here, just know you'll probably have to take it outside.Helpful 4Thanks 1Love this 1Oh no 0 - Mar 9, 20241 check-in
Good Takoyaki! [Japantown, San Francisco CA]
I've never had a takoyaki before and looks like this was a good place to start so I decided to be adventurous and treat myself to some balls LoL! There is always a long queue every time I pass by their kiosk but this time it went pretty quickly. While in line we were able to watch them prepare the takoyaki on a clear window... they are cooked in a cast iron griddle to hold its signature shape (round balls).
They come in different flavors, I chose the Garlic Shoyu Butter Takoyaki in which daughter and I shared (5-pcs to see if I like it first). Turns out these savory Japanese street food weren't too bad. The takoyaki is made up of four main parts: the lightly crispy shell, the doughy inside, a small piece of octopus tucked inside and, lastly, some sort of topping (they are basically balls of wheat flour-based batter).
The kiosk is attached to Mochill Mochidonuts and is located in the West Mall of Japan Center in San Francisco.
I was really impressed with what we tried. I've experienced frogs legs, bison, buffalo and alligator meats before but my first time for an octopus.

I always stop by here when Japantown has there cherry blossom festival. This time I tried their mozzarella cheese takoyaki and the negi mayo ponzo takoyaki, both were delicious! I love how they make it fresh and you can see the staff making the takoyaki. A great place if you're craving takoyaki. The wait can be a bit long, but it's definitely worth it!

As close to Osaka as it can get. Come during the weekday and you can expect almost no line. My favorite topping is to get it with cheese, but original is good too. You can either order it in quantities of 5, 8, 10 or 12. They come out very hot so if you don't want to burn your mouth, wait a bit. There's tables and chairs if you want to go around to the other side. Staff were friendly and smiling.

The main reason why this place is getting 5 stars is because their habanero mayo is AMAZING!!!
I am not a huge fan of takoyaki because I find it heavy/ greasy... there's a Korean word that perfectly describes it... neukgi...
However, their habanero mayo sauce cuts thru the grease... Yes the sauce is spicy... If you love spicy you will love it.
We got their cheese takyoyaki + habanero mayo and LOVED IT!
I will definitely be back if in SF again.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Apr 9, 2024
Came here on a Monday afternoon and there was no wait at all. Service was quick and our takoyaki came out almost instantly. I got the Garlic Shoyu Butter Takoyaki and it was decent. I loved how flavorful it was and the garlic pieces on top were great, but I would say the texture was a bit off. The filling was pretty mushy and I think it would've tasted better if the squid had more of a crunch to it. The outer shell was also drenched in sauce so it wasn't as crispy as I wanted it to be.

This place always has such a long line, and I finally understand why!! This place is so legit, they have the best takoyaki I've had in the states. Went on a perfect time, it was like the calm before the storm because right when we left the line formed. When the line is long, they do tell you the wait time can get long but it's definitely worth!
My Order:
Regular Takoyaki - 5 pieces were perfect for an appetizer before we went into a restaurant. The takoyaki balls were bigger than I've ever seen them and they were so delicious. They were made fresh to order since there wasn't any line, we barely waited for it to arrive. Even though it was just the regular, it was very flavorful and had the perfect amount of octopus and toppings. I can't wait to come back to try all of the other flavors.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - 2097240Nov 27, 2023
Seeing the takoyaki made fresh created a great deal of anticipation on the end results. Unfortunately the takoyaki did not taste as good as the performance.
The takoyaki was really soggy and was falling apart before the first bite. The piece of octopus was really small and added no value to the experience. Overall taste was okay, the sauce added a bit of saltiness and creamy texture.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0
