During these times, I would recommend calling ahead to make sure they are open and have what you want - you can even call the order in ahead of time!
unfortunately, when we went in the mid-afternoon, they had only one bahn mi left. The bahn-mi itself was great - good crunch of the bread and quite delicious bbq pork. That said, it doesn't quite compare to the bahn mi's you'll get in Houston, particularly the pate, etc. You might also be a bit shocked by the price but it's totally normal for Austin bahn mi prices.
Their plate dishes are good as well. The bbq steak didn't come with enough meat (compared to the bbq pork). The vermicelli portions are quite large.
The guy running the joint is super nice.
All in all, I think this place is good for an Austin bahn mi experience, but doesn't quite match up to what you'd find in Houston or DallasHelpful 1Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Michelle T.Austin, TX21311443Aug 12, 2020
I heard great things but found the meat to be very unflavorful and the lack of sauces only affected if more. The fish was also a bit basic. This was my first time so might have come on an off day. I will say the egg rolls were amazing and the thai tea was perfect but again there was no sauce with the egg rolls except sweet and sour (the kind you get at a Chinese restaurant)
It was okay all in all, but the best banh mi in Austin is still Kuway's banh mi truck on 45th.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - 179470687Jul 5, 2019
I am so shocked I have not written a review about Vans Bahn Mi. Not only is Van a total sweetheart but he serves up the best egg rolls I've ever had! They pair great with duck sauce or you can ask for fish sauce which is my fav way to eat them! Do not get just 1 or 2 or trust me, you'll be coming back for more! 5 is usually a safe bet.
The pork Bahn Mi is juicy, tender, and so delicious. The bread is crusty, the aoili is awesome, and the cool carrots and diakon is a nice contrast to the spicy fresh jalapenos! Great now I want a Bahn Mi and eggrolls! DON'T SKIP OUT ON THIS FABULOUS FOOD TRUCK!Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 3Oh no 0 - Apr 6, 2017
Excellent Flavor! The guy definitely cooks with passion, I wish I would've gotten his name but I'm sure I'll get it next time because I'm definitely going back!
Currently they're running a $5 special for a pork shoulder bahn mi and a coke. Very filling - Very good flavor.
Grilled marinated pork shoulder grilled on skewer and placed in a baguette. He then filled it with all the appropriate condiments which made it everything Pop with every bite.
If you haven't been, go check it out. I'm curious to see what the other dishes taste like.Helpful 8Thanks 0Love this 7Oh no 0 - Mar 18, 2017
The grilled pork here is the best we have ever had, and we eat a LOT of pork banh mi. It's extra crispy and well seasoned with pepper, marinated well and cooked perfectly. When you pair this exceptional grilled pork with impeccably fresh banh mi bread, fresh toppings and a gooey fried egg, it's Banh Mi Heaven!!!
The pork banh mi here is so delicious that we came back on consecutive days. The outstanding Yelp reviews led us here when we were visiting the area yesterday looking for a place for lunch. Today we are back for our last meal in Austin on this trip because the banh mi was THAT GOOD!
Van's Banh Mi bumped tacos off the lunch possibility list, which is nigh impossible to do and therefore is high praise indeed.
EAT HERE!!! We will next trip for sure!!

I have been trying to find a banh mi spot in Austin to meet my needs. I found Van's on Yelp and was so surprised how highly rated they were with many reviews. I pass Van's often on my way to work so I have seen them and finally decided to give it a try. First off, I was skeptical because true banh mi thit (traditional banh mi) is with cold cut meat and pate. This truck does not sell the traditional banh mis and only offers banh mi thit nuong (banh mi with grilled meats). I was like ok, not gonna be what I am used to but I'll give it a try. I got the #3 pork shoulder sandwich which was around $7 (they also have grilled ribeye $9 and grilled chicken $7).
After my first bite of my sandwich, I get it now, the 5 star reviews and all. The meat was grilled to perfection, a bit crispy on the outside and soft and not too chewy on the inside. And the flavor was out of this world! The sweetness of the marinated pork with the cilantro and pickled carrots and daikon just worked.
I took away 1 star for very minor reasons and it doesn't take away from me coming back here again and again. The bread traditionally should be a bit crispier on the outside, whereas the bread from this truck was although light, it was a bit doughy. Now I wouldn't go to the extreme and make it too crispy with no yummy bread filling either. Also, a cold cut banh mi will (should) IMO typically go for $5, so this was a bit pricier. I get it though, the meat is higher quality, it is extra work to grill it, and one's got to make a living, especially here in Austin. All in all, definitely stop by the truck to grab a quick lunch sometime, it will definitely be worth it!Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Oct 10, 2018
The egg rolls here are the bomb! I'm glad I got three instead of one. I also ordered the chicken bahn mi and it was delicious! Nice flavor to the chicken and a little bit of heat from the peppers but balanced out by the other veggies. A perfect bahn mi if you ask me. The man working the truck was super friendly. When he used my name I was surprised. He clearly got it from my card I just handed him but using a customer's name is going the extra step in customer service and like music to my ears. I'd absolutely come here again. I want to try the pork bahn mi and I need more of those egg rolls in my belly!

Our friend brought over some banh mi from this place after finding out Tam Deli switched owners.
Never knew this food truck existed off Burnet but I was glad to try their pork sandwich out. It was delicious, tender and had just the right ratio of meat!
Only complaint is that they didn't have the combination sandwich but the "Thit Nuong Banh Mi" made up for it!Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Emma P.Humble, TX3525522Jan 20, 2021
Classic place to grab a bite at North Loop. I love all of their Banh Mis and also their ice coffee.
There's a little bit of seating outside but i recommend taking it to go!Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Bridgette M.Eugene, OR063Jul 19, 2020
Such an amazing and adorable food cart! Van is such a sweet man, and he made me and my boyfriend feel welcome and appreciated at his business.
The food itself was divine. The vegetables tasted fresh, and the meat was flavorful. I'm planning on eating here a lot more often to support him during the pandemic.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0
