I have been missing a solid banh mi for a while. Whatsub is a good option for those of us who are feeling some type of way towards our French baguette + fish sauce + fresh veggies combo.
I literally searched banh mi, and this spot popped up. I loved the service and plethora of parking. The man working the cashier was very kind and took his time packaging everything for me, even though all I got was the banh mi. It's located on Broadway in a strip with other stores/restaurants, so if you're driving too fast on Broadway--ya might miss it. I didn't get a chance to get any of their specials, but it seems like their lunch specials are where it's at. There was plenty of seating for all group sizes, and they also served other items like boba smoothies and protein bowls.
I had just gone for a hike by Faulkner Park, and was in the mood for a refreshing sandwich. My tofu banh mi was pretty good, but it doesn't beat the gigantic and fresh banh mi's I've had in San Diego and San Jose in terms of portion and quality of bread. I think for east Texas, WhatSub is ideal. However, when the baguette still grazes the roof of your mouth instead of hugging it, you know it's a little too crisp. I still love y'all, WhatSub! I'm just a bougie banh mi gal, so keep doing what y'all do.Helpful 3Thanks 0Love this 3Oh no 0 - Billy T B.Frisco, TX28793Jun 20, 2020Updated review
Not so good anymore. Any restaurant where employees don't wear face masks is a bad sign. I placed an order for pickup over the phone and asked the woman not to repeat my card number in front of others (she kept doing it.) within 11 minutes after the order was charged, I get a call from my bank asking if I had made multiple charges.
When I walked in, I saw the guy making the banh mi sneeze into his right elbow as he stood over the sandwich prep station. It was only then I realized that no one behind the counter had on masks. They did have on food prep gloves.
Back to the debit card issue--I asked the fraud department if there was s time stamp, and they said all five charges were verified exactly 11 minutes after to order was placed at Whatsub Banh Mi.
The manager was absolutely no help and told me that the owner would tell me exactly what he would say.
So, if you want to run the risk of getting your debit card compromised and you don't care about your health, by all means go get a banh mi here.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0Aug 12, 2017Previous reviewWhatSub has been opened about three weeks at the time of this review. Finally, a Vietnamese place that's not fusion. We ordered the house special banh mi and the grilled pork salad bowl. Both were very tasty, well-seasoned, and priced just right.
The french roll on the banh mi was crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside. This very flavorful sandwich hit the spot. The grilled pork salad bowl with Vietnamese dressing was ample and satisfying. The grilled pork was most excellent and prepared fresh.
I hope these guys make it in traditional Tyler. I know that I plan to give them my support. - Jeremy B.Dallas, TX493285Aug 31, 2019
This local place is amazing!!! Friends and other foodies in the area raves about it so I tried it finally. So mad I waited as long as I did. It's a new favorite
Cool environment/lighting though the super long picnic tables are a little tricky to sit at when you can't move the benches because others are already seated.
Very friendly staff
Good variety on the menu while staying focused on their style/flavor. There's something for everyone, even the kids or picky eater.
Plan on dropping $7-12 a meal depending on your appetite and choices!
Hurry up and get here!!Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Cari M.Tyler, TX371317Jul 7, 2019
Much love for WhatSub Banh Mi! We have been frequent visitors lately. We honestly can't get enough! We can always expect great service, high standards of cleanliness, and especially delicious, fresh, and consistent meal quality. The menu selection has a nice variety with customization options. They have specials occasionally on weekends, which are announced on social media.
Another plus: the atmosphere is also enjoyable. It's simple, natural, and modern.
P.S. Their Thai tea is delicious!
This local, family-owned small business is completely worth supporting.
Thank you for continuing to provide Tyler with your delicious Vietnamese food!Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Ali T.Orange County, CA05021Oct 20, 2019
I'll preface this review by saying that we're from Southern California, so we eat a lot of Vietnamese food, banh mi included. That being said, this was the PERFECT way to end our short trip to Texas--after a couple days of BBQ, the house special banh mi and spring rolls REALLY hit the spot!
Service was lovely from the moment we stepped in to when we left. The guy working the cashier and the other guy who brought us our food were both friendly.
I'll be honest--I was skeptical there would be banh mi that could rival the banh mi in Westminster and Garden Grove, CA, but this place totally kills it. The bread is super fresh, crusty on the outside, soft on the inside (absolute requirement), the veggies are crisp and fresh (second most important), the pate was solid, and the mixed cold cuts were perfection. I will say that the meats were a bit different than what I've had in my cold cut banh mis from home, but were nonetheless delicious! Another difference--the pickled daikon and carrots weren't as tart as they usually are at home, but maybe that was a choice to cater to local tastebuds. Either way, I didn't mind and would definitely come back when I'm in Tyler!
Thanks for a great lunch, WhatSub!Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Jen C.Jacksonville, TX262920Dec 30, 2020

Good place to get Vietnamese food. There are few options in this town that are not gross fast food burger or taco joints. I'm sick of seeing so many of those places.
Only downside is they can be a bit slow getting your order ready.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Stephany C.Austin, TX3362313Aug 24, 2020
This is one of my favorites in Tyler. The grilled pork rice bowl is my go to! The pork is perfection, the two sauces are both great but my favorite is the Vietnamese dipping sauce. The pickled veggies add so much goodness. The Vietnamese iced coffee and spring rolls are great too. Seriously, I have not had anything bad here.

Coming from Vegas, with an abundance of Vietnamese restaurants & a Chinatown, I may have a very biased opinion. As well as a bar set too high, lol
Somewhat disappointing banh mi sand which. Bread did not seem fresh, as described by other Yelpers. Benefit of doubt, perhaps an off day. Had 2 Banh Mi specials & 2 pork. VERY dry & a very modest amount of meat/veggies.
Over $24 was way too much. In Richardson these are $3, but if you buy 3 you get one free. $10 for 4 sandwiches. I get this isn't Richardson or Vegas but a dollar or 2 more would be acceptable. That's not a $6.50 sandwich, without chips or drink. And it is fairly small sandwich to boot. I wouldn't go back due to quantity & cost of food. Too many other choices in town than to spend $24 for fast food, carry out sandwiches.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0
