Scholarships Soar to $70,000 Thanks to Sloter Grant 

Nearly $70,000 in scholarships 

were awarded to the North Iowa 

High School Class of 2011 at 

Commencement on Sunday, May 

22. The array of memorial scholarships 

given away each year got a 

big boost this year from the Ben 

Sloter Memorial Grants, which 

totaled $42,000 for 2011. 

Scholarships awarded at 

Commencement are as follows: 

W.D. Ley - two $2,500 scholarships 

to Logan Hovland and Rachel 

Rolling; and two $1250 scholarships 

to Amber Paden and Michelle 

Boekelman.

THE BUILDING BOOM CONTINUES ... in Buffalo Center, with 

Farmers Trust & Savings Bank being the latest business in town 

doing some remodeling. The bank is expanding with the addition of 

a new board room, a pair of offices and a reception area going up 

on the northwest side of the building. Larson Contracting of Lake 

Mills and Albert Lea was busy putting up the walls last Friday morning. 

JOHNSON’S FOOD CENTER ... has also been busy making 

improvements lately, as they installed new freezers last week at 

their location in Buffalo Center. Stocking the freezers is Julie 

Faugstad. The grocery store also installed brand new checkout 

counters a few weeks ago.

JOINING 18,000 OPRAH FANS ... in Chicago for a surprise farewell for the famed talk show host on May 

17 were Lauren and Mary Giesking of Lakota. The Gieskings were lucky enough to score tickets to 

“Surprise Oprah! A Farewell Spectacular” from a relative who works for Oprah’s production company. 

Gieskings, Stars Say Farewell to Oprah 

Two lucky Lakota ladies got to 

experience the show of a lifetime as 

they attended the taping of 

“Surprise Oprah! A Farewell 

Spectacular” in Chicago on 

Tuesday, May 17. 

Mary Giesking and her daughter, 

Lauren, were among 18,000 lucky 

fans to get tickets to the star-studded 

show held in honor of Oprah 

Winfrey at the United Center. 

Oprah ended her namesake talk 

show last week after 25 years. The 

Farewell Spectacular was aired last 

Monday and Tuesday as the two 

penultimate episodes of The Oprah 

Winfrey Show. 

Mary says the experience was, in 

a word, “Amazing!” 

“Like so many people, I’ve been 

an Oprah fan for years and always 

wanted to attend her show, but 

never made the time to travel to 

Chicago,” said Mary. “When Oprah 

announced that this would be her 

final season, I knew it was now or 

never.” 

While an estimated 150,000 people 

requested tickets for the 

farewell special, the Gieskings had 

a leg up, as Mary’s nephew, Greg 

Giesking, works at Harpo Studios 

in Chicago. He secured four tickets 

for the Giesking girls, as Mary and 

Lauren were accompanied by 

Mary’s sister-in-law, Barb, from St. 

Peter, MN and Barb’s daughter-inlaw, 

Jennifer, from Menomonie, WI. 

The ladies arrived at the United 

Center around 4:30 p.m. and waited 

outside for over an hour with thousands 

of other fans before the doors 

opened. The first show got underway 

at about 7:15, with Tom Hanks 

and Tom Cruise serving as co-hosts. 

Celebrity guests included Patty 

LaBelle, Josh Groban, Dakota 

Fanning, Beyonce, Madonna, 

Rascal Flatts, and Diane Sawyer. 

Will Smith opened the second 

show, and Oprah and the audience 

were suprised with an appearance 

by former Chicago Bulls Star, 

Michael Jordan. More celebrities 

graced the stage, including Jerry 

Seinfeld, Maria Shriver, Rosie 

O’Donnell, Maya Angelou and 

Aretha Franklin. Usher closed the 

show with a performance of “Oh 

Happy Day!” “Everyone was on 

their feet singing along as confetti 

shot over the stage,” described 

Mary. 

“The entire experience was 

mind-blowing,” Mary added. 

“There was so much energy and tal- 

ent.” 

The Oprah Winfrey Show first 

aired in 1986, and Mary says she 

remembers watching a few 

episodes with her roommates in 

college. Now a fourth grade teacher 

at North Iowa Elementary School, 

Mary hasn’t been able to get home 

from school in time to watch Oprah, 

but she has had her DVR set to 

record each episode. “When I have 

the time, and control of the remote, 

I have a personal Oprah marathon,” 

said Mary. 

While The Oprah Winfrey Show 

is now over, Oprah’s fans aren’t 

being left out in the cold. She 

launched a cable channel earlier this 

year, called OWN: Oprah Winfrey 

Network, and her future plans 

include hosting a prime-time show 

on the channel. 

Vacation Bible School Next Week 

The Vacation Bible School program 

in Buffalo Center, provided 

by First Reformed, First 

Congregational, United Methodist, 

and Bethlehem Lutheran Churches, 

will run from June 6-10, from 5:30 

to 8:30 p.m. each evening. VBS 

will be held this year at United 

Methodist Church. All children four 

years old through 6th grade are welcome 

to attend. You do not have to 

be connected to one of these 

churches to attend. 

This event is free for all attending. 

Registration will be the first 

night. Meals will be served at 5:30 

for the children, but please do not 

send children to the church before 

5:30. A program will be held at 7:00 

p.m. on Friday night. 

The focus of the week is God’s 

Recipe, and because of that, VBS 

coordinators are asking the kids to 

do certain things. The first is to 

wear certain colored clothes for 

each night, or at least shirts. Colors 

for each day are: Monday - orange, 

Tuesday - green, Wednesday - red, 

Thursday - purple, and Friday - 

blue. 

The kids are also asked to bring 

food for the food bank as part of 

their daily offering. The packaging 

of the non-perishable food items 

should also match the color for the 

night. Every night, there will also 

be a challenge offering that will go 

to Heifer International. 

SWIMSUIT SEASON HAS ARRIVED ... as the Buffalo Center Swimming Pool opened its gates for the summer last week. While opening 

day on Wednesday was a bust with cool and rainy weather, 4th and 5th grade students at North Iowa Elementary got a chance to hit the 

water during P.E. class last Tuesday.

BOB TALES

Heitland Maxwell. 

My father, G. Bob Heitland, was 

a man of few words. For years, my 

sister, Doris, brother, Burr and I 

knew very little of his family or 

boyhood. We do know that he was 

born in Chapin, Iowa, but later 

moved to Wolsey, South Dakota, 

probably around 1908. At age 17, 

he and his parents moved to Buffalo 

Center, Iowa where he remained 

until 1957. Upon his retirement 

from Jensvold Implement Co., he 

and our mother moved to Ft. 

Lauderdale, Florida where he 

opened a Phillips 66 gas station. 

However, after he suffered a massive 

brain hemorrhage in 1964, 

things changed. He was totally 

paralyzed on the left side and was 

in constant pain, thereby preventing 

him from receiving therapy. 

Consequent-ly, he spent the next ten 

years in bed or a wheelchair. To 

counteract boredom and despair, 

he asked our mother to fix him a 

board across the arms of his wheelchair 

so that he could write. This 

was the beginning of what I like to 

call "Bob Tales." 

HARVEST TIME - 1906

The year was 1906, the hour 

6:00 a.m. according to the alarm 

clock on the shelf in our room. It 

was not the alarm which had awakened 

me, however, but a lot of noises 

coming from the kitchen and 

carried up the stairs through a door 

which someone had forgotten to 

close. Strange smells, too, came 

floating up, and helped to awaken 

me. 

I stumbled sleepily down the 

stairs and carefully peeked around 

the door into the kitchen. The place 

was full of women, and all seemed 

to be working at something. They 

had added boards to the kitchen 

table. The now-very-large top was 

covered with an assortment of pots, 

pans, roaster, and kettles. Someone 

spotted me, and I was quickly 

pulled in. I was handed a milk pail 

with instructions to go out in the 

orchard and pick up the nicest 

apples I could find, some that were 

not damaged by birds or by the fall 

onto the ground. 

Outside the house I found Dad 

building a bench about three feet 

high and ten feet long. He was also 

tying a clothesline from one tree to 

another. Seeing my curiosity (as 

any six year-old-boy is full of), he 

explained this was a washstand and 

a place to hang towels. Today was 

the day the threshers were coming 

and would soon arrive. No wonder 

we had all those cooks in the 

kitchen. This was a big day on the 

farm. Everybody would be here. 

All the neighbors for miles around, 

and the kids too, generally came to 

share in the excitement. 

About this time, a shrill blast 

from a steam whistle let us know 

that the machine had arrived at our 

gate. Running out to meet it, I saw 

the big steam tractor coming up the 

lane through the trees, making 

strange noises and belching big 

clouds of black smoke from its long 

stack at the front end. Following 

closely behind it was the big boxlike 

threshing machine, with its 

sides all clustered with varying 

sizes of pulleys connected by belts 

running in all directions. Behind 

this came a team of horses pulling 

the water wagon, which was a long 

tank mounted on wheels and having 

a seat at the front for the driver. 

I ran quickly over behind this 

parade to see what kind of tracks 

this ten-ton monster was making in 

our yard. 

Then I followed it across the 

yard and up the hill between our 

barn and granary. It went through 

the gate to the back farmyard where 

the remains of an old straw pile 

caused a problem. It was necessary

for them to circle it to get in position 

to make the new straw pile 

right next to the old one. Dad came 

out to show them exactly where he 

wanted it. They maneuvered 

around to the exact position that he 

pointed out. 

The separator man (the separator 

was the big box-like machine 

which did the threshing) got out his 

spirit level and checked the 

machine in both directions to see 

that it stood level. This was necessary 

to ensure a good job of cleaning 

the grain. Now the engineer 

backed up the big steamer until he 

was about fifty feet away and facing 

the separator. Here, he stopped 

and ran over to the machine and 

unrolled a hundred foot roll of canvas 

and rubber belting. Then, with 

the help of the separator man, he 

put one end of this belt over the big 

pulley on the right side of the 

steamer while the other end was put 

over a smaller pulley on the front of 

the separator. 

While this was going on, eight 

of the neighbors' young men had 

arrived with hay racks. They were 

out in the oats field loading up the 

shocks of grain. Now the first ones 

returned to the yard with a full load 

of bundles. The separator man 

unfolded the feeder, which was a 

long trough with a traveling apron 

in the bottom which would carry 

the bundles of grain up into the 

machine. In its extended position, 

this feeder was sixteen feet long. It 

gave the boys a chance to pull their 

loads of bundles along side and 

made it easy to unload into the 

feeder. With a load in position on 

each side, the engineer climbed up 

on his platform, gave three short 

blasts on the whistle, and slowly 

backed up the steamer until the 

long belt between the two machines 

was as tight as a fiddle string. 

At the same time, the separator 

man was turning a wheel at the

THURSDAY, May 31, 2001 

On the last day of the 2000- 

2001 school year, students in 

Kindergarten through grade 4 gathered 

on the west side of the school 

to hold a quick groundbreaking ceremony 

between rain showers. With 

the students, faculty, and staff gathered 

in a half-circle, Supt. Larry D. 

Hill shared with the gathering the 

plans to demolish part of the building 

and what was going to be built 

in that space. As students returned 

to the building following the ceremony, 

they gave the old building a 

“high five” because they would 

never see the building the same 

again.

Robin Kettwick, were out in force

pipe up into position. He turned it 

around so that it pointed to the spot 

where Dad had told him to put the 

straw stack. The engineer gave two 

short blasts on his whistle and 

slowly moved a short lever in front 

of him. With a hiss of steam, the 

big wheel carrying the belt began to 

rotate. As the belt moved, every 

pulley wheel on the separator 

began to move at the same time. 

Slowly it picked up speed, and a 

low hum came from the big 

machine. The apron in the bottom 

of the feeder began to move. The 

two boys started throwing bundles 

into the feeder. The bundles were 

carried slowly back to the opening 

in the front end of the separator 

where a row of large whirling 

knives quickly cut the strings on 

the bundles and gave the straw an 

extra boost into the machine. 

The engineer tossed a shovel of 

coal into the firebox. A big cloud 

of black smoke at once came out of 

the stack and drifted lazily away. 

The separator man stood on top of 

his machine. He kept an eye on 

everything, including the bundlehauling 

boys, to make sure they 

pitched the bundles into the feeder 

correctly and not crossways or doubled 

up. He could tell by the 

sounds if everything was operating 

properly. He would signal the engineer 

to stop if anything was wrong. 

The day's work had begun. 

20 YEARS AGO 



On Saturday, May 11, the 

(Lakota) children gathered on the 

sidewalk in front of the City Park to 

get ready to go tree planting after 

several rain delays. They represent 

the 4-H Clubs and Girl Scouts. 

They planted around 30 trees and 

shrubs of different types at the 

Maple Hill Cemetery, along the 

highway from Richardson’s Body 

Shop out to the Lakota sign.They 

also planted a silver maple near the 

Community Room at the park. 

Residents of the Buffalo Center- 

Rake and Lakota school districts 

are urged to sign the Petitions for 

Reorganization which are being 

circulated in the two districts, 

according to Ron Pilgrim, BCR 

school superintendent.

THURSDAY, MAY 28, 1981 

Mel and Pauline Murray were 

pictured at one of the tables in the 

dining area of their new Mel’s 

Supper Club, which recently opened 

here. The Club is an extension of 

the Murray’s Center Cafe, which 

was remodeled and expanded to include 

quarters for the supper club. 

Lakota rural mail carrier, Edwin 

J. Steenhard was honored last week 

for 25 years of service to the 

Lakota Post Office and the U. S. 

Postal System. Steenhard was presented 

a silver tie tac as his silver 

anniversary award by Postmaster 

Kathleen Ruby. 

40 YEARS AGO 



The Tribune introduces to our 

readers this week Mr. and Mrs. 

Mark Fellom who have rented an 

apartment in the Lande Apartments 

in making their new home in 

Buffalo Center. Mr. Fellom, 24, is 

the new police chief here. 

in the lives and efforts of two 

Buffalo Centerites. Larry Costigan 

owned the pole vault record for 

Buffalo Center high school for this 

length of time until his mark was 

broken by Mark Peters. Mark broke 

Larry’s record of 10’3” at the Eagle 

Relays in Eagle Grove when he 

cleared the crossbar set at 11’0”. 

Mark sported a cast on his left arm, 

which he broke while attempting to 

clear the cross bar at 12’6” in the 

state track meet. The misfortune 

occurred on his second attempt 

after his first vault again cleared 

12’0”. 

50 YEARS AGO 


THURSDAY, June 1, 1961 

Dr. Van Vasey, a graduate of the 

Palmer School of Chiropractic in 

Davenport with the Class of 1952, 

last week purchased the Ralph 

Wirtjes estate house on the east end 

of town and will move his family 

here and practice his profession in 

rooms to be located in the home. 

Mr. and Mrs. (Esther) Vasey and 

their seven children- Autumn, 

Junelle, Raina, Carla, Evanne, and 

the twin boys, Blaire and Barth, 

will move here shortly after June 

first.

Arnevik and Fister Plan August Wedding 

Dan and Lonnie Arnevik of 

Thompson are pleased to announce 

the engagement of their daughter, 

Kayla, to Cole Fister. Cole is the 

son of Dana and Becky Fister of 

Riceville, IA. 

Kayla graduated from North 

Iowa High School and has a degree 

in Radiologic Technology from 

Allen College in Waterloo, IA. She 

enjoys working at Mercy Medical 

Center in Des Moines as a 

Radiologic Technologist. Cole 

graduated from Riceville High 

School. He then graduated from 

North Iowa Area Community 

College and received his B.A. 

degree in Exercise Science from the 

University of Northern Iowa. In 

August, Cole looks forward to starting 

Des Moines University's 

Doctorate of Physical Therapy 

Program. Currently, he works at 

Mercy Medical Center in Des 

Moines in Rehabilitation Services. 

The couple has planned a small 

wedding at the Des Moines 

Botanical Center in August. 

Ramsey Reformed 125th Celebration 

Ramsey Reformed Church in 

rural Titonka will celebrate its 

125th Anniversary on June 11 and 

12, 2011. The theme of the weekend 

is “Our Heritage: Faith, 

Family, Missions” as the congregation 

centers on the Bible verse from 

Colossians 3:12, “God loves you 

and has chosen you as his own special 

people.” They invite everyone 

to join them for this 

Quasquicentennial Celebration. 

On Saturday, June 11, from 1:00 

- 5:00 p.m. there will be a “High 

Tea” in the church Fellowship Hall. 

Coffee, tea and refreshments will 

be served. This will be a time for 

old acquaintances to visit and share 

stories of the past, and to view a 

slide show presentation of pictures 

and events of the church. 

Memorabilia will be on display, 

and 125th Anniversary items for 

sale include Tea Cups & Saucers, 

Vases, and Anniversary Calendars. 

On Sunday, June 12, the current 

Pastor, Rev. Perry DeGroot, will 

lead the Anniversary Worship, 

which begins at 9:30 a.m. Former 

ministers and/or their family members 

will be sharing their greetings. 

Former Pastor Larry Ten Haken 

will give the message. 

At noon, there will be a freewill 

catered meal at the church.

acknowledged. Following the 

Hymn Sing, the festivities will conclude 

with the serving of anniversary 

cake and coffee in the 

Fellowship Hall. 

God has blessed this rural congregation 

with 125 years of ministry 

and service as they continue to 

bloom on the prairie for Christ.

Home to Ramsey” as they celebrate 

this milestone in the life of the

It’s been another wet week. 

Good Spring weather just isn’t 

ready for us yet. (We’re all ready 

though!) 

This week, we had a change of 

day for our program. (It was well 

worth the wait of an extra day.) The 

Lakota American Legion Auxiliary 

and kids from Lakota put on a 

Memorial Day program. It was so 

nice and very well done. It made us 

feel very ‘special’ to think they 

come here to do it for us. We certainly 

do thank all of them for their 

parts in the program. 

Tuesday afternoon, we had a 

special treat of ice cream in sugar 

cones. That was real good. Ice 

cream is good any time. 

Ruth Smith celebrated her birthday 

on Monday. We sang Happy 

Birthday to her at noon and she furnished 

ice cream and wafers for our 

dinner.

last Sunday doing this for us as she 

is moving on to a new church to 

serve. She will be at the Sibley- 

Ocheyedan Charge. We wish her 

well and thanks for the times you 

were here to do our church service!

Reminding Drivers to Buckle Up 

Law enforcement agencies in 

Iowa are joining officers and highway 

safety advocates across the 

country again this year for the 2011 

National Click It or Ticket safety 

belt enforcement mobilization, 

which began Monday and runs 

through June 5. During the mobilization, 

officers will be cracking 

down on motorists who fail to wear 

their safety belts, both day and 

night, as well as all other traffic 

infractions. 

Because nighttime passenger 

vehicle occupants are among those 

least likely to buckle up and most 

likely to die in crashes when unrestrained, 

nighttime enforcement has 

become a priority of the Click It or 

Ticket mobilization. In Iowa, of 

those who died in nighttime crashes 

in 2010, nearly two-thirds, or 62%, 

were not wearing safety belts at the 

time of their fatal crashes, 

Additionally, 50% of Iowa’s traffic 

fatalities occur during the daytime, 

when 88% of the motoring public is 

traveling. The remaining 50% occur 

at night, when only 12% of 

motorists are on the road. 

Iowa law enforcement will be 

out en masse during the Click It or 

Ticket mobilization looking for violators. 

If an officer finds you on the 

road unbuckled anytime or anywhere, 

you can expect to get a $127 

ticket, not a warning. No excuses 

and no exceptions. High-visibility 

enforcement like the Click It or 

Ticket mobilization is credited with 

increasing Iowa’s belt usage rate 

from 75% in 1997 to an observed 

daytime usage rate of 93% in 2010. 

Belt use saves thousands of lives 

each year across America. 

According to the Iowa Department 

of Transportation’s Life Toll program, 

6,458 lives have been saved 

wearing seat belts since Iowa’s 

safety belt law took effect in July, 

1986. 

Also, a reminder, May is 

Motorcycle Safety Awareness 

month, and with the onset of nice 

weather, there is an increase in 

motorcycles. Please be aware of 

their presence during this month 

and throughout the year. 

Pens for Troops 

Huge Success 

Students collected 905 pens during 

the Pens for Troops campaign 

at North Iowa Elementary School 

this spring. The 3rd and 4th grade 

classes started the project, and all 

of the elementary classes got 

involved by collecting pens. 

The top collectors were the second 

graders in Mr. Eichenberger’s 

class, with a total of 287 pens. Mrs. 

Giesking’s fourth grade class came 

in second with 210 pens.

RSVP Volunteers Recognized 

Rod Hansen, Betty Kloster- 

Delgado and Joyce Landheer, all of 

Buffalo Center, were among over 

100 North Central Iowa RSVP volunteers 

who were recognized for 

their generous donation of time and 

talents provided to elementary and 

middle school students in the North 

Iowa region. Volunteers were honored 

with a special luncheon celebration 

held May 12, on the NIACC 

campus in Mason City. 

Dr. Debra Derr, president of 

NIACC, welcomed the volunteers 

to the celebration which included a 

keynote address from Dr. Larry 

Hill, presentation of lifetime service 

awards and musical entertainment 

by Indigo Nights barbershop 

quartet. 

“We truly appreciate the work of 

our RSVP volunteers,” stated Derr. 

“We’re here to celebrate these valuable 

contributions to our area 

schools, and I want to thank each of 

you.” 

Guest speaker, Dr. Larry Hill, 

former teacher and administrator, 

also applauded the contributions 

given to the future generation of 

parents, teachers and leaders for 

North Iowa. Noting that the children 

in elementary schools today 

have never known a time when 

there wasn’t a war on terror, Dr. 

Hill commended the volunteers for 

their time investing in the future of 

our country. “As a RSVP volunteer, 

you are creating a legacy for the 

future,” Dr. Hill said. “Thank you 

for your investment – you do make 

a difference!” 

Babysitting Clinic Day Camp June 3 

The Winnebago County 

Extension will hold a Babysitting 

Clinic Day Camp Program at the 

North Iowa High School in Buffalo 

Center on June 3 from 8:30 to 11:30 

a.m. This training is for all children 

ages 11 and up who are interested. 

Children will learn the fundamentals 

and the responsibilities of 

babysitting. 

The kids will go through real life 

and safety situations that will prepare 

them to be the best babysitter

Durby the Supervisors moved to approve cancellation 

of the West Law Information System. 



Stensrud the Supervisors moved to approve 

the following Resolution to transfer funds from 

an inactive account. All voted aye. Motion 

carried. 

RESOLUTION 05172011-02-01 

RESOLUTION AUTHORIZING TRANSFER 

FROM INACTIVE FUND 

WHEREAS, on May 17, 2011 Fund 0055, 

Linden Capital Project Fund, an account set 

up for TIF is inactive, 

WHEREAS, Certified Public Accountants 

Gardiner & Thompson, the firm who completes 

Winnebago County's external audit, has 

requested the Fund be closed and 

WHEREAS, the Linden Capital Project 

Fund contains the amount of $55,020.68 

NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, 

that the Board of Supervisors authorizes an 

Operating Transfer from Linden Capital 

Project Fund to Linden Urban Renewal Debt 

Service Fund in the amount of $55,020.68. 

AND BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED the 

Winnebago County Treasurer close the Linden 

Capital Project Fund.

in the Winnebago County Auditor's Office.

discussed Secondary Road and Drainage 

Ditch matters. 

Larry Torkelson and Richard Torkelson discussed 

Drainage District 54. 

Gary Garst discussed Drainage District 7 

Lat 2 and the need for the enforcement of the 

1978 agreement. Adam Sauer, County 

Attorney discussed the options regarding the 

1978 agreement; he stated the agreement 

needed to be enforced or rescinded. After 

much discussion there was a motion by 

Stensrud and second by Durby to send a letter 

to Terry Kiewiet stating the Board would 

enforce the agreement. Ayes - Stensrud and 

Durby. Nays - Wubben. Motion carried.

Resources to be covered under the NPDES

The storm water discharge will be from the 

construction of a monoslope cattle confinement 

located in the NW ¼ of Section 14 in 

German Township, R27W, Kossuth County.

Phillip C. Thompson, 24, Lake 

Mills, pled guilty May 10 to the 

charge of possession of a controlled 

substance. He was sentenced to 10 

days in jail; driver's license was 

revoked 180 days; and ordered to 

pay fines, fees and costs totalling 

$1,358.41. Charges were filed by 

the Winnebago County Sheriff's 

Dept. 

James Neuenkirk, 24, Forest 

City, pled guilty May 10 to a controlled 

substance violation, child 

endangerment/no injury, and OWIfirst 

offense. He received a suspended 

sentence on the first two 

counts and was placed on probation 

for 3-5 years; driver's license was 

revoked; and ordered to pay fines, 

fees and costs totalling $565. On 

the third count, he was sentenced to 

30 days in jail; driver's license was 

revoked; and he was ordered to pay 

fines, fees and costs totalling 

$1,877.50. All charges were filed 

by the Winnebago County Sheriff's 

Dept. 

Michel Hammack, 47, Lake 

Mills, pled guilty May 10 to the 

charge of possession of a controlled 

substance. Hammack received a 

deferred judgement; was placed on 

probation for six months; and

by the Lake Mills Police Dept. 

Kristin Behrends, 19, pled guilty

Lakota Community Club met on 

Monday, May 22, at 7:00 p.m. at 

Miller Time Bar & Grill with nine 

members present. Reverend Ron 

Wheeler led the members in prayer 

of thanks followed by President 

Oftedahl calling the meeting to 

order. Minutes of the last meeting 

were read along with treasurer’s 

report. 

Old Business: 

• Discussed scholarships given 

out last year and this year. Four 

were given to Lakota graduates this 

year. 

• “Adopt-a-Highway” project 

was completed with eight members 

helping on Thursday, May 5. Also 

discussed renewing contract. Club 

is responsible for a two-mile stretch 

west of Lakota along highway. 

Decided to renew. 

• Club members will meet sometime 

this summer to make new 

luminaries for use at Christmas 

time. 

New Business: 

• Have not received any invitations 

to enter the Centennial Train 

in any parades as of yet. Need to 

check the train for any decorations 

that need to be replaced and check 

that the tractor is ready, too.

26.

The Lakota Summer Recreation 

Bus will travel from Lakota to the 

Buffalo Center Swimming Pool 

every Tuesday night, starting on 

Tuesday, June 7. The bus will leave 

from the Eagle Center at 6:45 p.m. 

The bus will return to Lakota after 

the pool has closed.

slips that need to be signed by 

the parents the first night for the 

kids to be able to ride.

Shoemaker, 68

married to Larry Shoemaker at 

Sheryl Kay Shoemaker, 68, of Rapid City. The couple moved to 

Henderson, NV, formerly of Lakota the Adrian, MN area and began

Swea City, where Sheryl worked at 

the Bancroft Bank in Bancroft, IA, 

later working for Artsway 

Company in Armstrong, IA and the 

Bank in Swea City. After her marriage 

to Don, she moved her family 

to Rapid City, SD and began work-

many friends.

Middle Musings from NIMS Out Now 

The 11th annual writing contest 

at North Iowa Middle School concluded 

Tuesday, May 17, with an 

awards ceremony at the school 

auditorium. The writing contest 

began in January in the classes of 

Mrs. Joan Bidne. 

The contest and publication of 

Middle Musings is sponsored by the 

Literary Circle of Buffalo Center. 

All students were required to 

write an entry in poetry, short story, 

or true experience. The students had 

a month to complete their entries. 

In February, their teacher collected 

their work and turned it over 

to the Literary Circle, who arranged 

for community members to judge 

the works, which were identified 

only by numbers to avoid any 

favoritism. 

After the works were judged, 

they were put into the magazine 

called Middle Musings. This year is 

the 11th year of its publication. 

The winning students each 

received a magazine and a certificate. 

All others received participation 

certificates. The booklets can 

be found in all the local and public 

school libraries.

Spot herbicide applications to

the summer as sites of infestation

local FSA county office by June 30 

to meet FSA program eligibility 

requirements. 

Producers should visit their 

county FSA office to complete 

acreage reporting. For questions on

specific crop reporting deadlines 

and planting dates, producers 

should contact their county FSA 

office. In Winnebago County, call
